After 2 years, House of the Dragon returns with Season 3, and it kicks off spectacularly. Everything you need to know about Episode 1 is summarized in spoilers.
Attention Spoilers: The following article spoils the events from Episode 1 of Season 3 of House of the Dragon. You have been warned.
At the end of Season 2, the war between the Blacks and Greens was brewing, and in Episode 1 of Season 3, it kicks off directly with the Battle of the Gurgle, resulting in heavy losses.
We’ll summarize the battle and its outcomes after the video.
A Brutal Battle on the Water
Before the Battle of the Gurgle begins, we see Daemon’s successes in the Riverlands. Together with his new alliance and the warriors of House Stark, he manages to defeat the Lannister army and also kills Jason.
In the Battle of the Gurgle, however, it is about the port blockade by Rhaenyra. To reopen it, the Greens turned to a triarchy from Essos. In the midst of the battle are the leader of the Velaryons, Lord Corlys, and his bastard son Alynn.
Sharako Lohar, the leader of the opposing side, is actually not keen on helping Ser Tyland Lannister to break the blockade; she has a personal feud with Corlys and is hunting him. Moments before, she throws Tyland overboard. This leads to two fights.
How does the battle on the water proceed? Jacaerys, the son of Rhaenyra, rushes to the battle with the dragon Vermax after he has imprisoned his mother. He is joined by Baela, Daemon’s daughter, with her dragon Moon Dancer.
The power of the dragons is very evident here, as Baela and Jacaerys can burn ships effortlessly and decimate the triarchy’s fleet.
A lot of chaos, however, is caused by a 3rd dragon. Rhaena, Baela’s sister, suddenly swoops in with Sheepstealer, but she cannot control him.
He attacks allies and enemies alike and even hunts Moon Dancer. When Jacaerys tries to help her, Vermax is taken out by a harpoon he was hit by earlier and sinks into the water. There, Jacaerys is killed by arrows.
On the other side, there is the fight between Corlys and Sharako. He manages to decimate her ships, but with her ship, she rams him, leading to a battle on the boats. Corlys ends up in the water, and Alynn confronts Sharako. Sharako dies in the fight against Alynn.
Overall, the Greens lost this battle, but the consequences were extremely high, showing once again why dragons are such a powerful and dangerous tool. You can find a ranking of the dragons from Westeros here: The 10 Most Powerful Dragons in the Game of Thrones Universe in Power Ranking
