In the Steam sales charts, Hogwarts Legacy holds the top 4 positions. But how can the same game occupy multiple spots? Is everything above board? MeinMMO clarifies.
Despite scandals and calls for boycotts, the new Harry Potter RPG “Hogwarts Legacy” is extremely successful. The game broke a record on Twitch, where thousands of viewers watched how aspiring wizards were sorted into the houses Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin and began their adventure at the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
A look at the sales figures on SteamDB shows that Hogwarts Legacy occupies the top 4 positions in the charts. Only in fifth place is there another product, Valve’s handheld console, the Steam Deck. But how can it be that one game occupies multiple spots?
The very first trailer for Hogwarts Legacy caused a stir. Fans of the books and movies had long wanted such a game in the Harry Potter universe.
Without magic, Hogwarts Legacy secures the top spots
The success of the RPG from developer Avalanche Software on Twitch is also reflected in the sales figures. In the Steam charts, the Deluxe edition of the game takes first place. The Standard edition occupies second and third place. Again, the Deluxe edition lands in fourth place.
Why are there different Standard and Deluxe editions? This has to do with the so-called SKUs. SKU stands for “Stock Keeping Unit” in English, which translates to inventory number. These numbers are assigned to a product to identify it uniquely. Since there is both a pre-order and a release version for the Deluxe and Standard editions, a total of four different SKUs have been assigned to the game.
These four different SKUs also ensure that there are four different entries in the Steam database. Regardless, these entries reflect the incredible success of the game: All versions generate substantial revenue. If there were only 2 SKUs, the game would only appear in the top two positions of the Steam charts, but the gap to third place would be even larger.
