With Black Myth: Wukong, the Chinese developer studio Game Science has created a surprise hit. You play as the Monkey King Sun Wukong and fight against other mythical beings from Chinese folklore.
In terms of gameplay, Black Myth: Wukong offers a similar feel to Elden Ring and other soulslikes: you fight against tough opponents and gigantic bosses with sharp action gameplay. Since you play as a monkey, you should have correspondingly good reflexes.
The focus on Chinese mythology has especially caused a surge of players from China, but the game has also been successful in the West – partly due to a rather unpleasant political debate.
Black Myth: Wukong has made such an impact in 2024 that it almost received the title of Game of the Year, but had to compete in that category against Elden Ring. However, both games ultimately lost to an unassuming indie title, the cute platformer Astro Bot.
