Twice a year, GTA Online receives a major update – in summer and winter. This winter, drift races, wildlife, and a well-known character from Liberty City are coming.
What kind of update is this? The winter update 2023 for GTA Online is a content update that brings some improvements for you. Some are available for all players, others only for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and some are only available with the subscription service GTA+.
When will the update be released? A specific date is still pending. It is currently only known that it will be released in December 2023.

What’s in the winter update 2023?
The story: Crimes are still carried out on the streets in GTA Online. You should steal, dismantle, and sell coveted vehicles. Your client is known from Liberty City and goes by the name Yusuf Amir. You know him from GTA IV and The Ballad of Gay Tony.
Steal expensive luxury cars for Yusuf and let his cousin Jamal help you. To keep things less conspicuous, you officially work for Red’s Auto Parts. In this context, there is a junkyard that you can buy. Decide after the thefts whether you want to sell the cars to Yusuf or strip them for parts to sell.
New races: In the world of GTA Online, there is already a wide range of races. Circuits, point-to-point races, stunt races, races with different classes. With the winter update, the selection will be expanded to include drift races. Those who played Need for Speed Underground [2] may perk up now.
We know about the drift races:
- You can add drift modifications to your cars
- A drift racing series will be made available
- At the LS-Car-Meet, you can modify selected cars with drift tuning – so you can also drift in free mode outside of races
Improvements on PS5 and Xbox: Rockstar Games explains in the blog post that they are utilizing the “advantages of the new console hardware of the PS5 and Xbox Series” and will bring the following features for these platforms with the December update:
- Wild animals roam the landscape in the southern part of San Andreas
- Members with GTA+ receive access to a garage with 100 spaces
- You can more easily sort and manage your garages on the consoles through simple drag and drop
Improvements on all platforms:
- The interaction menu is being revamped, making navigation within it easier
- Participation in street and chase races now brings more reputation points at the LS-Car-Meet
- At the LS-Car-Meet, you can also now buy copies of other players’ personal cars on PC, PS4, and Xbox One
- You can now name the individual floors differently in Eclipse Blvd
- The voice chat on consoles is now disabled by default
- A small gift will be waiting for you on your character’s birthday
What’s next? A major highlight this winter is the snow update for GTA Online. This year, the holidays will also be celebrated. Expect new music, new holiday modes, player experience improvements, creator updates, and festive surprises.
