As the author of Game of Thrones, George R. R. Martin enjoys a legendary status among the community. But for almost 15 years, fans have been waiting for the next book in the series. What the author has been doing instead is revealed in this list.
In 1996, the novel A Game of Thrones
by George R. R. Martin was published. It was not his first work, but to this day, the universe of Westeros is likely his most famous world – after all, there are now already 3 series related to the series and several projects that are still in progress.
In 2011, the 5th book in the A Song of Ice and Fire
series titled A Dance with Dragons
was released. Since then, fans have been waiting for the next novel. The Winds of Winter
has even become a meme, as some fans believe that the book will never come out.
But George R. R. Martin has not been simply idle; since 2011 he has been working on other projects, some of which we will show you in this list. All specified release dates in this list refer, unless otherwise noted, to the original English release of the projects.
In summer, the 3rd season of House of the Dragon will be released:
Other book projects in the universe of Game of Thrones
Even though the story of Game of Thrones has not been continued in the novels for almost 15 years, George R. R. Martin has still expanded the universe of Westeros. Between 2013 and 2017, he published 3 short stories (The Princess and the Queen, or, the Blacks and the Greens, The Rogue Prince, or, a King’s Brother, and The Son of the Dragon).
This series serves as a prequel and tells the story of the Targaryen dynasty and their civil war Dance of the Dragons
. The three-part series was then picked up and expanded in the 2018 novel Fire & Blood. The HBO series House of the Dragon is also based on this story. He did something similar with his Hedge Knight novellas, which were published before 2011, but he re-released in the larger novel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2015.
Besides that, Martin has also published other books/extensions to the universe of Westeros:
- The Lands of Ice and Fire (2012) is a collection of maps of the world
- The Wit and Wisdom of Tyrion Lannister (2013) is a collection of quotes from the titular character
- Westeros: The World of Ice and Fire (2014) is a companion book with many illustrations from the perspective of a maester about the world of Westeros, which George R. R. Martin co-wrote with authors Elio M. Garcia Jr. and Linda Antonsson.
- The Rise of the Dragon (2022) is also a companion book about the history of the Targaryens, again in collaboration with Elio M. Garcia Jr. and Linda Antonsson. It is based on Fire & Blood but is written more like a history book with many illustrations.
But these are all just titles in the A Song of Ice and Fire
universe. In addition, there are his other literary projects.
