Astonishingly many ideas from real life can be implemented in the survival game Valheim . A player has now found a way to catch fish using a type of giant fish trap – a trap that easily provides you with large amounts of fish.
What kind of trap is this? With the fish trap, catching fish in Valheim is significantly easier and faster than using a fishing rod. You will only need a few components and a simple workbench for that.
The trap essentially consists of just three components. With a narrowing “funnel”, the fish are collected over a large area and then lured into the trap at the front. There, a ramp awaits to elevate them further.
The ramp is equipped with doors that can either transport the fish further or trap them if the trap were ever to fail. All components require only wood and can be easily constructed.
How do I build the trap? The Reddit user VincentNacon explains step by step in his thread how to build this trap (via reddit). You will actually need quite little wood – depending on how deep the water is and how far the “funnel” extends:
- build normal wooden walls all the way to the bottom of the water body. They should reach up to the water’s surface
- let the walls gradually come closer together until only a 1×1 meter section fits in between
- place 1×1 floor plates from the ocean floor in a staircase shape upwards. Alternatively, you can use 26° roof pieces
- build doors one meter next to the ramp spaced one meter apart
Once you have constructed everything, you just need to drive the fish into the funnel by herding them in front of you. At the steps, you then close the previously opened doors and elevate the fish.

Why does this work? Unlike players, fish can traverse the only one-meter-wide passage, but cannot turn around there. Because they need physical space to turn, which is not provided to them in the passage.
Through the door, you can simply push the fish out of the water or even catapult them out to collect them on land.
By the way: Fish come in three different sizes. The small ones provide one unit of raw fish, the medium ones two, and the largest provide four portions.
What use do I have for the trap? Fish is an ingredient for fish wraps, which you can craft towards the end of the game. Fish wraps are among the best food in Valheim because they provide the highest stamina value of all foods so far.
You need flour from the plains in addition to fish, so you can only make the wraps quite late. However, they are worthwhile for longer journeys or larger construction projects for which you want a large stamina bar.
Another advantage is that you don’t even need a fishing rod. Fishing is currently only available from the merchant Haldor, who is often very hidden in the world. However, if you would rather fish, you can find the merchant in Valheim more easily with a small trick.
More useful buildings and tips in Valheim
The resourceful Vikings of Valheim have already given considerable thought to the game before the fish trap and how they can creatively utilize the building system. For example, various versions of a sundial have quickly established themselves, which is much more useful than it first sounds.
If you frequently roam the plains, a hideout could also be beneficial. Hideouts can be built into rocks and can only be entered through a small entrance that you can easily defend if necessary. And the secret hideouts in Valheim don’t require too much work.
If you prefer to transport your friends across the map, you can use the power of doors and harpoons to catapult them with a human catapult. If they survive the landing, it’s a quick way to travel.
