Since last year we have known that a film based on the Borderlands universe is in the works. Now, renowned actor Kevin Hart has joined the cast in an unexpected role.
This is what happened: As announced by the official Twitter account for Borderlands, Kevin Hart has officially joined the cast of the Borderlands film. He is set to portray the role of Roland, who is known from the story of Borderlands 1 and 2 (via Hollywood Reporter).
Roland is a tough soldier and leader who organized the resistance against Hyperion and Handsome Jack.
Who is Kevin Hart anyway? The actor and comedian is primarily known for his funny roles in films like Scary Movie 1 and 3, Jumanji, and Fast and Furious Hobbs & Shaw.
It was speculated back in late 2020 that Hart could take on the role of Roland, when other cast members were announced. Many fans are not convinced by the casting of such a serious role for a more comedic actor.
Kevin Hart seemed more fit to play Claptrap
Why it doesn’t fit: Many fans cite Kevin Hart’s voice and height as reasons why he simply wouldn’t fit the role of the big, serious soldier with a deep voice. While Hart is about 1.60 m tall (via. celebheights.com), Roland is reportedly about 1.8 m tall according to the Borderlands Wiki.

What do fans say about the casting? Many are skeptical about the choice of actor. The announcement tweet alone has garnered over 830 reactions (as of 27.01.2021) and the responses are mostly negative. For example, BillyInzin writes:

Most do not fundamentally doubt his abilities as a comedian, but many feel that due to his previous roles he cannot play such a serious role. Some would rather see him in the role of Clap Trap, like MacDramastic: “Are you all sure he won’t play Clap Trap? He would fit much better as Claptrap!” (via Twitter).
Are all reactions negative? There are also some voices that call for patience. Some hope that Hart shows a new face in this role. It would not be the first time that actors thrive in an unusual role.

So it remains to be seen whether Hart can surprise in his new role, or if he will confirm the fans’ fears.
What we know about the Borderlands film: Directed by Eli Roth, whose announcement also caused confusion. The plot is not expected to be a 1:1 adaptation of the games but will retain the crude humor. Besides the now confirmed Kevin Hart, actress Cate Blanchett will be portraying Siren Lillith, whom many of you may also know from Borderlands 1 and 2.
