Even before the release of Borderlands 3, a player calculated how quickly the characters improve. This also reveals how long weapons remain useful: Shorter than in Borderlands 1 and longer than Borderlands 2.
Borderlands 3 is not yet released, but fans are eager for new information and are working with what has been published regarding gameplay so far.
In the shooter’s subreddit, a user claims to have calculated the HP curve at which players’ health points increase. This allows for conclusions about how long weapons can be used before they become obsolete or unusable.
Because in previous parts, weapon damage also increased parallel to health points, as any math friend knows.

Why this is important: This may sound like mathematical trivialities, but ultimately it determines how the game feels, whether you frequently swap weapons or keep them for a long time.
So it was in the past: This level curve has changed drastically in Borderlands.
- In Borderlands 1, HP increased “linearly” by the absolute value of 15 per level. Therefore, players could stick with a “low-level” weapon for a long time. The higher weapons were hardly stronger.
- In Borderlands 2, however, HP increased by 13%. Here, weapons became obsolete very quickly and needed to be replaced often. A “good item” found early had hardly any value.
Reddit user analyzes massive gameplay: Reddit user SirArkhon has reviewed all available gameplay material and compared players’ levels with their HP values. From this, he was able to create a formula that Borderlands 3 apparently uses to calculate how much the health points increase per level-up.
This, in turn, could also be an indication of how quickly weapons become “weaker,” simply because they become unusable due to too high a player level and enemies become too powerful.
This is the formula: According to his calculations, user SirArkhon arrives at the formula “HP = 80 x 1.09^Level”, and all decimal places simply drop off.
For the health points of a character in Borderlands 3, this would mean, corresponding to the respective level:
- Level 1: 87 HP
- Level 2: 95 HP
- Level 10: 189 HP
- Level 25: 689 HP
- Level 72: 39,609 HP
These are the findings: SirArkhon concludes from these numbers that weapons in Borderlands 3 will be approximately 40% longer useful than in Borderlands 2 before they need to be replaced by new guns.
He infers this because it took an average of 5.7 levels in Borderlands 2 to double a character’s stats. In Borderlands 3, this takes nearly 8 levels – about 40% longer.
The development of enemies in Borderlands (i.e., how much damage they can take) has always been in accordance. Therefore, it can be said that weapons will likely remain useful longer before they need to be replaced, as the enemies have become too resilient.
This is how Gearbox reacts However, these values should be taken with caution. After all, the HP curve is not final yet, and much of what has been shown was likely specifically tuned for the gameplay sessions of the streamers. The final result in September may therefore differ.
This has also been confirmed by Gearbox, who told the colleagues at IGN:
“The dedication and passion of our fans always amazes us! However, it must be noted that the game is still in development and the level progression and scaling are not final yet. But we will reveal much more about this in the time between now and the launch.”
It at least seems that Gearbox took the criticism of Borderlands 1 and 2 to heart and is accordingly adjusting the level curves.

Do you think it’s good if Borderlands 3 finds a middle ground between part 1 and part 2? Or did you particularly like the loot and level system in one of the parts and should it be adopted?
