The latest DLC “Shadow of the Erdtree” brings new content for Elden Ring, which players can soon engage with, and one of them is Messmer the Impaler. Who he is, we will show you here in our info article.
Who is Messmer? In the new DLC for Elden Ring, Messmer is one of the important figures you will meet in the Shadowlands. FromSoftware has prominently featured the red-haired god in many promos and declared him the new supervillain.
What we do know is that Messmer is the hidden son of Marika, the goddess from the Lands Between. He is said to have received the task from his mother to cleanse the Shadowlands, causing many individuals to burst into flames. He and his army therefore swept through the land, enveloping everything in their flames of death and destruction.
Now there are only ruins, impaled corpses, and debris to be found in the Shadowlands. The crusade seemed to have been successful, but at what cost?

Butterflies have already announced the antagonist
What have players discovered? There is much speculation on Reddit about Messmer’s origin. Many fans are convinced that Messmer is the long-lost brother of Miquella (The God in Child Form) and Malenia (Goddess of Scarlet Rot). This is suggested mainly by the appearance and characteristic red hair of the villain. Furthermore, theorists suggest that butterflies had already announced his presence at the release.
There are different types of butterflies, but each of their types is said to symbolize a god:
- Growing Butterfly – Miquella
- Aeonian Butterfly – Malenia
- Smoldering Butterfly – Messmer
Moreover, Messmer possesses a golden eye, which was created either by madness or by the dragon oath. Fans also believe that he carries the seal of the dragons, enabling him to create summons, like the flames in the trailer.
The flames could also be a mixture of Rykard’s flames from House Volcano and the blood flames of Mohg.
However, fans are certain that Messmer will be a tough boss, and if this god indeed comes from the same bloodline as Malenia, his fight will be just as comparable as Malenia’s – if not even harder.
