Essentially, it’s hard to say what the actual first boss in Elden Ring is. Because you can approach the game in different sequences. However, if you proceed chronologically, Margit, the Cruel Fate, is considered the first boss of Elden Ring.
What kind of boss is he? You will encounter him in the first major legacy dungeon of Elden Ring, the Stormveil Castle.
- After you have overcome the main gate and fought your way to the back of the castle, you will come across a bridge leading over an abyss. Margit is waiting for you there.
- This is a difficult opponent. Margit is fast, large, and uses powerful attacks that can present serious challenges for you.

Margit’s Chain helps you in battle
What does this item do? With Margit’s Chain, you can bind the boss. Using the item, you can hold him for a few seconds. These are valuable windows of time to deal damage to him.
If any of you have played Bloodborne, you probably remember the boss fight against Gascoigne. There was also such an item to make the fight significantly easier.
How to find the item:
- Get the item “Margit’s Chain.” To do this, you need to find the Murky Cave.
- This cave is located almost directly to the east of the boss in the gorge. Enter it and turn immediately to the right. Be careful not to trigger any traps.
- Continue until you find a chest and open it. You will now be attacked by an NPC. Fight him and spare him when he reaches about 75% health points. Leave the dungeon and return; the NPC will now sell you the chain for 5000 runes.
Summon spirits and the NPC
Before the boss fight, you have the opportunity to summon the wizard Rogier as support for the fight. To do this, you need to use a Curved Medicine in front of the boss area. Now the summoning symbol should light up on the ground.
Additionally, you can summon Ash spirits while you are in the fight. These are spirits of enemies that you can now summon for support. However, you will need a Summoning Bell for this.
