Before the DLC of Elden Ring is released, FromSoftware keeps its fans engaged with small teasers. A new one has emerged, and it has many fans pondering.
What does the teaser show? On May 13, 2024, the X-account of Elden Ring released a new teaser regarding its upcoming DLC. The DLC features an image of a new enemy as well as a sentence that fits the lore. The sentence translates to “The Forsaken and Tragic, who seek under the Core Shadow, pray for the embrace of a new master.”
As for the new enemy, it resembles an ancient being that moves through the dark swamps of the DLC with a cane. Its head glows yellow-orange and looks like a large orb covered with a net. Many fans believe this is a new version of the “Winter Lanterns” from Bloodborne – a grotesque being that could infect hunters with madness back in the day.
Although the image reveals much about the new DLC, it is mainly the teaser sentence that has many fans pondering. They believe it could mean more.
Theories revolve around Godwyn the Golden
What are fans speculating about? The teaser sentence mentions a Core Shadow, and while some fans believe it refers to the shadow of the Erdtree, others on Reddit believe there is more to it.
Reddit user Naqamel suggests that “Umbra” in English stands for the shadow of an eclipse and points towards “Castle Sol” on the mountaintop of the Giants. In this castle, the eclipse and its power were worshipped.
According to the theories, an eclipse could have brought back the murdered Godwyn the Golden or at least fully redeemed him, but Radahn, the Starscourge, kept all stars in check with his gravitational power and thus prevented this endeavor.
Additionally, it is interesting that this plan was also pursued by Miquella, the key figure in the upcoming DLC. After defeating the commander Niall in Castle Sol and reaching the highest tower, one can learn from a ghostly figure what plan the inhabitants had pursued.
The ghost has the following to say: “Lord Miquella, forgive me. The sun has not yet been swallowed. Our prayers were not enough. Your companion remains soulless… Now I will never see him, your divine Haligbaum…”.
However, since Radahn must be defeated at the start of the DLC, Godwyn could play an important role in the story. With his passing, the stars could move again, and thus an eclipse could occur. If the theory holds true, Godwyn could return as a shadow or even a full figure in the form of a boss to destroy you.
