Elden Ring is finally here, and players can now explore the vast, open world of the action RPG from the Dark Souls creators. However, some important things are easy to overlook. Especially an NPC that can make the game much easier for you.
What kind of NPC is this? We mean Renna, the Witch. You have probably already seen her face in our title image. She plays a short but important role at the beginning and gives you a very useful item: A Summoning Bell.
With it, you can summon help in particularly tough areas in the form of various NPC enemies.
That’s why you can easily miss her: First of all, Elden Ring isn’t a really linear game; the open world is a massive exploration place, as we show in our review. You can follow a prescribed path but still won’t be able to find everything right away.
- Renna also appears in a location you visit right after starting the game. The catch: She can only be found there once you reach a later point.
- So there’s a possibility that you won’t return for a long time and miss her entirely.
- Or worse: You return, but don’t expect her and even overlook her.
Therefore, we will tell you where she appears and how the summoning works.
Elden Ring – Find Renna and Obtain the Spirit Calling Bell
Where can Renna be found? You can initially find her in the Church of Elleh, which you come across right after the tutorial. There is also a merchant and a forge anvil to perform initial upgrades.
- However, Renna will only appear there once you’ve activated the Site of Grace at the ruins before the gate. Doing so will also give you Torrent, your spirit horse.
- Now you just need to fast travel back to the Site of Grace at the church and you will find Renna on a wall, to the left below the church tower.
- Talk to her and confirm that you are the Accursed one.
Does she stay there? No, eventually she is no longer at the church. If you take too long after receiving your mount, you will no longer find her there.
But that’s not a problem. Once you find the Grace Table, you can buy the bell from an NPC for 100 runes.

Then she gives you the bell to summon the ashes of your enemies as spirits. Additionally, you receive your first ash for summoning: The Wolf Pack. They are, for example, pretty useful in the first boss fight, and we already have a guide for that.
How does it work? First, you need to find corresponding spirit ashes to perform a summoning.
Then you must have enough FP, or mana, to perform the summoning. To increase your FP, you can level up the “Spirit” attribute or use certain talismans.
Where can I find ashes? Essentially, they can be found all over the game world. Some can be found in dungeons, and some are obtained from certain enemies. You will automatically come across them as you progress through the game. However, it won’t do you any good without the Spirit Calling Bell.
You cannot summon spirits everywhere; this is only possible in certain areas where you encounter particularly numerous or tough enemies. Additionally, summoning is usually possible in most boss fights.
These can be spirits that even support you with buffs, assist you with ranged attacks, fly, or can even be summoned in large groups.
You can also only have one active summoning at a time. It is also generally possible to call other players for help in co-op.
How do I know that I can summon spirits? You can recognize this by a gravestone symbol that flashes above your quick items.
In battle, however, you must be careful, as the summoning has an animation and can be interrupted by enemy attacks.
Throughout the game, you can find numerous of these spirit ashes and collect many useful helpers.
Here, there is a wide selection suitable for various situations. This is especially useful for players who can only play alone or offline and have issues with the difficulty of Elden Ring.
At launch, Elden Ring had some initial issues. However, the developers have already commented on the current problems and revealed what you can currently do.
