Steam has long ceased to be a platform for individual shooters and has become the world’s largest supplier of games. Numerous MMOs can now also be found in Valve’s distribution platform offering. We have listed the 20 successful MMO games on Steam for you (as of early March 2016).
In selecting this list, we put together a mix of the most played games and the biggest sales hits of the past weeks. We reviewed the first 50 results and included only games classified as “MMO”.
It’s important to mention that the game doesn’t necessarily have to be classified as a classic MMO but should primarily feature extensive and long-lasting multiplayer modes. The results were sorted by the number of positive user reviews.
Place 20: Elite: Dangerous
With “only” 65% positive reviews, Elite: Dangerous ranks 20th on this list. The space MMO realizes the “Open World” principle to a whole new extent. “Open Galaxy” is more fitting here, as players can explore numerous planets and uncover the entire Milky Way with all its secrets – once they get past the starting phase since in the beginning one only has a miserable spaceship and a few credits.

Place 19: ARK: Survival Evolved
The dino survival game “ARK: Survival Evolved” secures the 19th place with 73% positive reviews. Relatively unexpectedly, it has become an absolute bestseller in the past year, even though the game is still in an early access phase. Players can gather resources on a vast island, tame dinosaurs, form entire tribes, and build bases to live in peaceful coexistence with other players – or to ruthlessly bully them.

Place 18: The Elder Scrolls Online
The online spin-off of the Elder Scrolls series and thus the indirect successor to “Skyrim”, The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, finds itself in 18th place, with 77% positive reviews. Since the launch of the game, a lot has happened, as it has now moved away from the subscription model, so monthly fees are no longer required. Like typical MMORPGs, in the world of Tamriel you can engage in many different activities. Whether professions, PvE, PvP, or even theft, there’s always something else to experience, and fans of the series will particularly immerse themselves in the lore of the game world.

Place 17: Warhammer 40.000: Eternal Crusade
Just a few weeks ago, Warhammer 40.000: Eternal Crusade entered early access on Steam. Currently, it still feels more like a lobby shooter, but the developers promise that this will only be the case during the early testing phase as the shooter elements will be the lion’s share of the game and only when they work correctly will they add the large game world around it and practically integrate the MMO components. With 78%, the game from the 41st millennium already ranks 17th.

Place 16: Defiance
At least a proud 78% approval rating has secured Defiance. The MMO shooter convinces with an exciting story (which has recently been expanded) and attracts thousands of players every day to the remnants of planet Earth, where players battle for mysterious alien technology and constantly try to get a little more out of themselves and their equipment. An exciting mix of shooter and RPG awaits all who want to dive into battle alone or with a few friends. The entry barrier is low – because Defiance is also free-to-play.
