In the MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), players can complete many crazy quests. Now you can also solve a quest outside of ESO via Twitter, and MeinMMO author Larissa Then has managed to make a mistake.
What kind of quest is this? You can play ESO for free until December 9. Bethesda ANZ, that is, Australia and New Zealand, has launched a giveaway over Twitter which will run until January. Unfortunately, this is regionally restricted and we in Germany cannot participate. However, what we can do is solve the quest for the giveaway.
In the quest on Twitter, you always have different choices to select by clicking. You will then be directed to the next part of the story, depending on how you decided. Unfortunately, you need to be able to speak English for this, as the quest is not available in German.
Many dead ends await you, which always mean your death. And MeinMMO author Larissa Then experienced this herself a few times.
A short story as a digital gamebook
At the beginning of the quest, you already have three choices. You can go into the forest, to the snow-covered hills, or stay on the path.
It works like a gamebook, which many may remember from their childhood. I, for one, had such books and was always excited when it said again “If you enter the cellar, read on page 3. If you go upstairs, read on page 5.” This is how it looks in the ESO quest on Twitter:
In my books, I always tried all paths and read them, so I also showed some determination in the Twitter quest. I tried different paths and died four times before I survived one way.
And she died through animals, vampires, and a werewolf…
So in the first round, I fell victim to a pack of saber-toothed tigers. So I chose a different path to be torn apart by a werewolf. In the next round, I thought I would be clever and take the same path at the start and decide for the other way at the critical point, only to be killed by vampires.
Then I decided to stay on the safe path, but took a wrong turn and ran into the next vampire. It was only on the fifth attempt that I found a way to survive through several rounds and even eliminated a Harrowstorm that MeinMMO author Jürgen Horn finds cooler than dragons.
Of course, the quest is relatively short and the choices are limited. Also, it can be quite frustrating when you die after two clicks and get told “Your journey does not have to end, play ESO” – especially for perfectionists like me.
But nevertheless, it was a lot of fun to click through the different paths and end up elsewhere each time. The images used for the quests are well chosen, and the texts are well written. Especially fans of gamebooks and quests will find here several minutes of very good entertainment.
I, personally, am a huge quest fan and have already shared my favorite quests in ESO with you. The Twitter quest was all the more interesting to me, and I will probably still test the last paths.
