The creators of Dead by Daylight have announced a new game. “The Casting of Frank Stone” is set to offer solo horror – and present tough decisions.
The developer of Dead by Daylight, Behaviour Interactive, has partnered with professionals from Supermassive Games (The Quarry, Man of Medan) to create its own story-driven horror game. It will take place in the universe of Dead by Daylight but is intended to be a pure single-player experience.
During the Game Awards 2023, a first trailer for “The Casting of Frank Stone” was unveiled, which you can watch here:
What is “The Casting of Frank Stone” about? The exact story is not yet known. However, we know it will revolve around the city of “Cedar Hills,” which has experienced a brutal past. A certain “Frank Stone” has committed some atrocities here, leaving wounds – in families, generations, and even in reality itself. A group of teenagers sets out to learn more about it and will likely come into contact with the dark events centered around an old steel mill.
What we already know:
- The Casting of Frank Stone will be a single-player game with a horror focus.
- The game features numerous different choices.
- There are new characters not previously known from Dead by Daylight.
- The mysterious entity from Dead by Daylight will play a role.
- The game will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
- The game is set to launch in 2024.
MeinMMO questions for the developers
We had the opportunity to ask the developers behind “The Casting of Frank Stone” several questions. We spoke with Steve Goss (Creative Director of the game, SMG), Dave Richard (Senior Creative Director, Behaviour), and Mathieu Côtè (Head of Partnerships, Behaviour).
MeinMMO: Dead by Daylight already has a large roster of original characters that many people like. What led to the decision to use a completely new group of characters instead of the ones that are already known?
Steve Goss: We wanted the freedom to tell a story without being tied to existing characters. Our goal was to be authentic and show a story where the characters confront the truth of the DbD universe. It is a story that perhaps hasn’t been explored as directly as we plan to do with this game.
Even if the game doesn’t take place in the world of the entity, this mysterious figure can be seen in the trailer. Can we expect to learn a few new details about the nature of the entity?
Dave Richard: “Players can expect to learn more about the DbD universe from a new perspective in this game. For anyone who has never heard of Dead by Daylight or played it, “The Casting of Frank Stone” is a great way to be introduced to this diverse world and its story. They will be able to discover a part of this world they have never seen before.”
A while ago, another “Dead by Daylight” game, “Hooked on You,” was released. However, that game was not so serious and ultimately was not part of the official story of the main game. “The Casting of Frank Stone” seems to be significantly more serious and aligns with what one would expect from the world of Dead by Daylight – will the game therefore be part of the story?
Mathieu Côté: “The story in “The Casting of Frank Stone” is part of the canon of Dead by Daylight. This is the first time we are exploring a story outside the realms of the entity that we see in Dead by Daylight. It tells a story that hasn’t been explored yet. Of course, we cannot yet talk about how it will fit into the Dead by Daylight universe, you’ll have to find out in the game!”
Will Frank Stone and the “survivors” eventually be playable characters in the original Dead by Daylight?
Mathieu Côté: “That wouldn’t make sense, would it? :)”
In addition, we wanted to tease a few gameplay details from the developers, but they are keeping that under wraps for now. What they could share with us:
Steve Goss: “Regarding inquiries about gameplay, we need to wait a little longer before we can reveal more information about this part of our game. At this point, we can say that the game focuses on storytelling, player choices, and branching narratives, aiming to provide a very emotional and cinematic experience. Every decision made will shape the narrative and influence the fate of the characters, thus shaping the course of this captivating tale filled with life-and-death choices.
By working with Behaviour, we have integrated the insights from Supermassive Games while incorporating the values of Dead by Daylight, resulting in a new dynamic of core mechanics and player experience. There will be significant differences from previous Supermassive Games, such as in the execution of [Quick Time Events] or the application of pressure. Players can expect a greater variety of choices and a stronger influence on the narrative structure itself.”
