Just like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the new battle royale mode Warzone also has a crossplay feature. This allows players on PC, PS4, and Xbox One to play together. We explain how it works.
What is crossplay? Crossplay means that players on different platforms can play together in the same match. Modern Warfare has supported crossplay since its release, allowing players to team up on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
The new mode Warzone, which was released on March 10, allows this as well. In matches with up to 150 players, groups from different platforms can easily compete against each other – as long as they don’t prefer to play Warzone solo or duo.
Crossplay and Cross-Progression on PC, PS4, and Xbox One
How to use crossplay: The crossplay feature works in Warzone just like in the regular multiplayer modes of Modern Warfare. The feature must first be enabled in the game options under “Account”. By default, it is already on.
Then you need an account for Call of Duty. You can create one on the official Call of Duty site. To log in, you’ll need the credentials of the account you created when starting Modern Warfare.
With this account, you can subsequently invite friends from other platforms through the social menu in the game. The corresponding friends can be found in the “Activision” category instead of the platform-based category.
Battle Pass, Weapon Levels and Account Level – Everything increases thanks to cross-progression
What is cross-progression? In a blog post, Activision also talked about overarching progression. However, this does not mean that you can simply transfer your progress to another platform. While that does work, it means even more here.
Warzone is also playable as a free-to-play variant, but all progress you make will also transfer to your CoD account for Modern Warfare. This includes player levels, weapon levels, and levels in the current battle pass.
If you buy the game later on, your progress will be credited immediately and stored until then. If you already own Modern Warfare, all progress from Warzone will be credited to MW – and vice versa.
Crossplay in Warzone – Pros and Cons
Why should I use crossplay? The only real advantage of crossplay is that you can play together with friends almost barrier-free. Whether your best buddies only have a PS4, Xbox, or a PC, Modern Warfare works together anyway.
If you happen to know someone who is a literal god with the mouse or controller, you can of course benefit from having them carry you a bit.
Since Warzone is designed for teams of up to three players, a single good player in the squad is worth their weight in gold. If you want to disable crossplay on consoles, here’s the guide on how to do it:
What are the problems? However, there are also some problems with it. Usually, Modern Warfare tries to sort matches not by platform, but by input device.
However, this doesn’t really work in Warzone at the moment. Because people constantly leave the lobby, there are anyway issues with matchmaking. Therefore, there is a mixture of controller and mouse/keyboard in almost every match.
Input with mouse and keyboard is generally more precise than with a controller. This leads to PC players or mouse users having an advantage. In battle royale, this can decide between victory and defeat.
MyMMO author Benedict Grothaus has actually undergone the test and checked which device is really better:
