Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 celebrates its release on October 28 and is currently in beta testing. However, there is a “real” open beta only on two days. How you can participate and what you should definitely try out, we will show you on MeinMMO.
With Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty continues the series’ most successful premium title. The story takes place three years after the end of CoD MW 2019 and many familiar gadgets and mechanics return – even Warzone with a continuation.
To give you a glimpse of the new shooter, the developers are currently hosting a beta test. However, for some test phases, you need a pre-order or a beta key. However, there is also an open beta for 48 hours:
- Start of the open beta on all platforms
- From Saturday, September 24 at 7 PM
- Until Monday, September 26, 7 PM
- On PlayStation, the open beta is already active

CoD MW2: Open Beta – Download

Search in your respective store for “modern warfare beta” to start the download. By the way, you need Xbox Live to play the beta on Xbox, while PS Plus is not required on PlayStation.

The beta of CoD MW2 has its own product page on Steam. Activate the beta for your library and download the game.
Download on Battle.net
Add Modern Warfare 2 to your favorites. At the bottom left, you will see the “Install” button, which you cannot press yet. Use the drop-down menu above the button and select “Modern Warfare II Beta”. Now you can install it.
CoD MW2 Beta – 3 Highlights to Try
In the beta, you will find almost 20 weapons to test, and a large part of the gadgets and killstreaks from the main game are already implemented. The menu navigation in the test is terrible – you may need to click around a bit to get an overview.
From our own experience with the beta test, we recommend three highlights that you should definitely think about when you take a few test rounds.
Beta Highlight 1 – Crazy Game Modes
- Invasion
- Rescue the Prisoner
- Third-Person Moshpit
In the “Quick Play” playlist, you will find the two standard modes “Team Deathmatch” and “Domination” with four different 6v6 maps. Besides that, you can already try out some new modes that you shouldn’t miss.
Invasion: The “Ground War” from CoD MW 2019 is back. Large battles with 20vs20 players provide lots of action and fire from all directions. NPCs also play a larger role now – their behavior has been significantly revised. In Invasion, you can also test the new vehicle mechanics. The win conditions for Invasion are like those in Team Deathmatch.
Rescue the Prisoner: A similar mode already existed in Cold War (CoD 2020), and CoD MW2 tries again. There are no respawns, but each team member can be revived once. The winners must reach 500 points, and the mode can take a while. If the teams are balanced, an exciting tactical dynamic unfolds here over several matches.
Third-Person Moshpit: “From bug to feature,” as the colleagues from GameStar title. MW2 comes with a pure third-person mode and offers you the standard modes Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Hardpoint. Even if you are a clear first-person shooter fan: Try it out, it’s a new perspective and refreshes the gameplay.

Beta Highlight 2 – New Gadgets
- Deployable Cameras
- Breach Grenade
- Inflatable Soldier
The new gadgets in the game expand the gameplay in a meaningful way. Especially three of the gadgets you should put in your loadout or use one of the standard loadouts that come with the gear.
Deployable Cameras: Offer two functions: You can access a deployed camera to monitor the environment and mark enemies. However, the second function is even better. If an enemy runs through the field of view, you get a signal, even if you are not looking through the camera. This allows for strong coverage of large areas because you can have two cameras at the same time.
Breach Grenade: A nasty tactical component – the breach grenades drill through walls and drop a grenade on the other side. Even meters-thick obstacles are no problem. Try a little and you will find out how mean these things are.
Inflatable Soldier: You may not want to believe it at first, but this cardboard buddy works really well. You can place the field equipment anywhere, inflate it, and can almost be sure that an enemy will fall for it. This gives you the crucial seconds to take down enemies.

Beta Highlight 3 – K/D Freedom
The beta is a playground. You unlock new weapons and equipment extremely quickly and already have a good amount of content to test. During the beta, free yourself from the constraints of your statistics – your values will not carry over to the full game.
Ignore this point if you only check your kill-death ratio twice a year. However, if you always keep an eye on it, let yourself go in the beta.
Try the sniper rifle if you are usually more of a close combat submachine gunner. Try out gadgets that you would never touch otherwise. What happens in the beta stays in the beta.
Except for a few rewards: For leveling up in the beta, you will receive some cosmetics for the main game:
Modern Warfare 2 will be released on October 28 for PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and for PC on Steam and in the Battle.net launcher.
