The release date of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is officially on October 28. However, many contents can only be played later, but the campaign can be played significantly earlier with a digital pre-order. MeinMMO shows you an overview of when which release stages will be activated.
Why does CoD MW2 have 3 release dates? The content of Modern Warfare 2 comes in 3 stages:
- October 20 – Early access to campaign
- October 28 – Official release
- November 16 – Season 1 / Warzone 2.0
Due to the staggered releases, there isn’t an immediate influx of new CoD content. However, it is somewhat unclear when you can play what. MeinMMO presents the contents of the individual stages.

CoD MW2: Release – Early access to campaign
When does the 1st stage start? On October 20 at 7 PM, the first stage will be activated. The pre-load for the campaign starts on October 19 at 7 PM.
What content goes online? The entire single-player campaign goes online, with no previously known restrictions. If you complete the story, you secure content for multiplayer. All information about early access, the missions, and the story of MW2 can be found here.
Who can play? Early access to the campaign is for pre-orders of a digital edition of CoD MW2. The platform doesn’t matter – PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and the Battle.net launcher will have access. It is important that you have a digital pre-order, not a version with a CD.
CoD MW2: Release – Official release
When does the 2nd stage start? The official release is on October 28 with regionally adjusted times. PC starts at 6 AM, consoles at midnight.
The preloads also start at different times: PlayStation on October 20, Xbox on October 19, and PC on October 26 (Steam and Battle.net).
What content goes online? Here the multiplayer content starts – the big multiplayer mode and the co-op mode “Spec-Ops”. It is still unknown how many maps or missions will be available at launch. You can find our extensive info article on CoD MW2 here.

CoD MW2: Release – Season 1 / Warzone 2.0
When does the 3rd stage start? On November 16, CoD MW2 will step it up again. Season 1 starts with a lot of new content and Warzone 2.0.
What content goes online? The first service content will come into the game – new maps and weapons, new missions for the Spec-Ops mode. The announced raids have been postponed to mid-season 1 on December 14.
Additionally, the continuation of Call of Duty: Warzone will come on November 16. Currently, this battle royale is called “Warzone 2.0”.
There is a completely new map and many new mechanics. Also included is the DMZ mode: an extraction shooter. Check out our info article about Warzone 2.0 for more information.
Who can play? The new content in multiplayer and Spec-Ops is only for buyers of CoD MW2.
However, Warzone 2.0, including the DMZ mode, is completely free to play. As soon as there is more concrete information, you will find it on MeinMMO. For example, whether you need PS Plus for Warzone 2.0. That wasn’t the case for the predecessor, but it cost 25 cents.
