The first season of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War starts on December 10 and brings new content to the game. MeinMMO gathers all the facts & leaks about the first season and explains what the Warzone has to do with it.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has faced a lot of criticism for bringing very little content at launch. With the start of the first season on December 10, the developers at Treyarch aim to gradually combat this situation.
Therefore, MeinMMO shows you here what the rumor mill has served regarding the first season and what facts the developers have already established about the new season.
By the way – the first new map will come already in the pre-season and starts on Tuesday, November 24. The small cult map “Nuketown” is coming into play. If you log in by December 3, you’ll even get a matching weapon bundle.
Cold War: Season 1 starts on 12/10 and runs like in CoD MW
How do the seasons progress in Cold War? The developers have emphasized several times that they want to operate a very similar service model as the predecessor Modern Warfare. For players, this means that all gameplay-relevant content after release is completely free. Whether weapons, maps or modes – you don’t need to spend any more money to benefit from the season content.
Each new season also comes with a fresh battle pass. Here you can unlock more than 100 cosmetic items for 1,000 CoD points (about €10). The pass will also again have a free reward path, with which you can unlock a few things even without the 1,000 CoD points. This includes, for example, the new weapons.
Even before the official release of Cold War, the developers showed a roadmap with the contents of the first season:
Season 1: Content according to roadmap
- New modes & maps for multiplayer
- Modes for the zombie mode
- New weapons
- 2v2 Gunfight from CoD MW returns
- Secret Warzone experience
- And more
What else comes with Season 1? On December 10, the complete prestige system starts. So far, you can only advance 100 levels after your 55 military ranks and attain prestige rank 3.
No one can take these prestige ranks away from you, and with each new season, you can level up these ranks further (maximum 4 per season). However, unlike the pre-season, it will then continue, and you can advance another 1,000 levels after the 200 levels for the 4 prestige ranks and unlock rewards.
What about the merging of Cold War with Warzone? Also an exciting topic, where it will likely only be revealed on December 10 how it works. What is certain is that Cold War, Warzone, and CoD MW will merge their leveling systems, and there will be no difference anymore in where you earn your experience points. In all 3 CoDs, you can grind for your prestige rank or level up the battle pass. More information on this can be found here:
Moreover, weapons from Cold War are to come into Warzone. However, it is still unclear whether Battle Royale players will receive all weapons from Cold War all at once or if they will be introduced gradually.
In this context, Warzone & Cold War are more merging and leaving CoD MW somewhat aside. While you can use all your unlocked or purchased cosmetics from Cold War in Warzone, this does not apply to CoD MW. Also, the weapons do not transfer to the CoD from 2019, everything is limited to Warzone.
Leaks speak of 3 completely new maps with Season 1
What maps are coming with Season 1? A leak on Twitter mentions a total of 3 completely new maps for multiplayer:
- Dune
- Mall
- Echelon
What types of maps these will be is still unclear. The developers at Treyarch stated on Twitter on November 13 (the release date) that the following will come with Season 1:
- New 6v6 maps & modes
- New 2v2 Gunfight maps
- New Fireteam map
One of the maps could be reserved for the large Fireteam mode. The other two for 6vs6. However, new maps are also needed for the gunfights. The current maps seem too large for 2v2 matches, so new maps or reworked versions of the existing maps would be required. Perhaps Treyarch interprets the 2v2 skirmishes differently and works here with 6v6 maps.
Furthermore, the large Fireteam maps could also come as reworked versions for 6v6 modes. Excerpts from “Alpine” and “Ruka” for 6v6 battles would further increase the selection.
Here is the leak from Twitter:
Weapons, zombies, and scorestreaks are likely to increase
What about the weapons? It is considered quite certain that the Striker shotgun and the Groza assault rifle will come with the battle pass of the first season. Both weapons are shown on the roadmap. The operator “Adler” is holding the shotgun in hand, and in the “new weapons” field, a weapon can be seen that looks very similar to the Russian Groza. However, the Groza actually only comes from the 90s, although the multiplayer plays in the 80s. Current information still points towards Groza.
What about zombies? The leak initially teased a new map for zombies. However, it now seems more likely that a new mode will be introduced that expands the experience on the first zombie map “Die Maschine”. Further information about that is not yet available.
What about the scorestreak? The Twitter leak mentions the “K9 Unit”. Other sources consider the release of this scorestreak to be rather unlikely, as a previous leak photo had already shown 5 new streaks, but the K9 Unit was not included.
If it does come, it would be a dog unit that you send after your enemies. Multiple dogs storm the field and attack your enemies. If the opponents are quick enough, they can eliminate the dogs. However, the streak can result in quite a few kills and was already part of Black Ops 2, the CoD from 2012.
The secret Warzone experience is likely a new map known from Black Ops 1
What is the Warzone experience about? There is still no detailed information about this, but there are already some hints:
- Players deciphered the hint on the roadmap as “Rebirth Island”
- Some time ago, data miners found hints about the Alcatraz map in Warzone
- There is already a Rebirth leaderboard in Warzone
So it could be a new map based on the Alcatraz map from the spiritual predecessor of Warzone “Blackout”. It was part of a DLC from Black Ops 4 (CoD from 2018), and a return is quite conceivable. As a story background, an island from Black Ops 1 (CoD from 2010) could serve. On “Vozrozhdeniya Island”, experiments with weaponry were conducted in BO1, such as deadly nerve gases. A fitting template to replace the radioactive gas in Verdansk.
However, what is coming for Warzone is still not conclusively clarified.

Black Ops Cold War wants to replicate the success of CoD MW and relies on very similar recipes for this purpose. It sees itself as a service game that wants to remain current and exciting until the release of the next CoD in 2021. So you can expect a lot of content that will only land in the game throughout the coming seasons.
Until then, you can pass the time with weapon and prestige leveling. Maybe you want to try a new play style. A guide for beginners in the sniper and quickscope business of CoD Cold War can be found here.
