On October 1, Call of Duty: Mobile was released and within a week, the game has already broken several records. The mobile shooter is extremely popular and successful.
How successful is Call of Duty Mobile? Right at launch, the new mobile shooter climbed to number 1 in the download charts in over 100 countries. In the seven days since release, Call of Duty Mobile was downloaded 100 million times. This is reported by the analysis website Sensor Tower.
This makes the shooter the most successful launch of a mobile game ever. The revenue in the first week is also impressive: players have already spent 17.7 million USD.
The game from Activision clearly surpasses the numbers of other shooters like Fortnite or PUBG on mobile. Even purely mobile games like Mario Kart Tour or Pokémon Go fall short.
Only Mario Kart reached similar numbers
How did the competitors perform on mobile? In the first week after release, the other shooters also had a successful start, but did not compete with the numbers of Call of Duty Mobile:
- Fortnite achieved 22.5 million downloads in the first seven days and a revenue of 2.3 million USD.
- PUBG reached 28 million downloads but monetized the game only two months after launch.
How did other mobile games fare? Other games also lagged behind the strong numbers of Call of Duty Mobile:
- Mario Kart Tour achieved 90 million downloads in its first week and is thus Nintendo’s most successful mobile game at launch.
- Pokémon Go only reached 10 million downloads during the same timeframe.
- Even Harry Potter Wizards Unite, according to Sensor Tower, only achieved 6.5 million downloads.
Familiar content contributes to success
Why is Call of Duty Mobile so successful? In the Google Play Store, the shooter has an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars based on more than 2.6 million reviews.
Players particularly praise:
- The good controls.
- The smooth gameplay.
- And the many elements and content from other Call of Duty games, such as weapons or old maps.
Also, the fact that the mobile game can potentially be played on PC and maybe even with a controller in the future likely increased players’ interest.
A great success for Activision: After BlizzCon 2018 and the debacle surrounding Diablo Immortal, the success of Call of Duty Mobile is extremely important for Activision Blizzard.
