For weeks, players who pre-ordered their PlayStation 5 at Saturn and MediaMarkt have been waiting for their consoles. Now, the two retailers have announced that a delivery will not occur before the end of 2020.
This was the problem: When the pre-orders for the PS5 started in September 2020, the two German electronics giants Saturn and MediaMarkt also offered the sought-after console.
Many players pre-ordered their PS5 from the two retailers, but when the release came in November, the delivery did not happen. There were no shipping confirmations or other information regarding the status of the pre-orders. Now, the first customers have received emails with bad news from Saturn and MediaMarkt.
This is what the two retailers say: In short: If your order at Saturn or MediaMarkt is still pending, you will not receive your PS5 this year. There is also no new date.
Gameswirtschaft.de reports that all PS5 pre-order customers whose console can no longer be delivered received an email from the retailers with the cancellation on December 18, 2020, at 6:00 PM. So, it’s best to check your own emails if you are affected.
Saturn and MediaMarkt also apologize to the pre-order customers, as the situation does not meet “the defined service and quality standards”.
What’s next?
Here’s what you can still do: Unfortunately, the pre-order customers don’t have many options left in this case.
- MediaMarkt and Saturn offer in the email to continue waiting for the consoles, even though no new delivery date can be provided. As an apology, there is also a code for a 3-month PS Plus membership that will be delivered with the console.
- You can cancel your console order with the retailers and receive a refund.
There is also the possibility that there could be another wave of PS5 sales, although this is rather slim five days before Christmas. We have compiled a list of retailers that you should check regularly if you want to try your luck.
Another option is offered by the internet and phone provider O2. There, you can obtain a PS5 Digital Edition if you get the O2 Free M plan.
This is the current status regarding the PS5: Currently, the console is completely sold out. It’s also problematic that even customers who managed to grab a PS5 during other sales waves had to deal with sudden cancellations. This happened to a whole bunch of customers from Otto.
Meanwhile, there’s a real gold rush atmosphere on eBay and other sales platforms. Individual users who managed to use bots to buy large quantities of PS5s are now reselling the coveted console for astronomical prices, making a lot of money in the process.
A data analyst was able to calculate that the profits from the sale of PS5 and Xbox Series X on eBay amount to double-digit millions.
