Pearl Abyss, the creators of the glossy sandbox MMORPG Black Desert Online (PC) want to develop new games. Meanwhile, some information about two planned MMO projects has become known.
On September 14, 2017, Pearl Abyss, the development studio behind Black Desert Online, went public on the Korean stock exchange. At the same time, they assured investors that they were already working on 4 more MMOs alongside the sandbox MMORPG Black Desert Online and its mobile counterpart at Pearl Abyss. Two of them are expected to be released next year!
However, what exactly Pearl Abyss had in mind was not known until now. Meanwhile, the studio boss has revealed some details.
A mobile MMO without competition?
Dae Il Kim, the studio founder and chairman of Pearl Abyss, mentioned in an interview with the Korean website Inven about two of the studio’s new projects. They plan to create a new mobile MMO that is NOT Black Desert Mobile.
Instead, it is said to be a game without a medieval setting. The game will be developed for a global audience and all age groups. Additionally, it won’t focus on player competition. Rather, the emphasis will be on having fun meeting other players.
Pearl Abyss wants to try its luck with a MOBA shooter
This already sounds curious, but Pearl Abyss’ other concept tops this even more. Allegedly, the second project is a mix of a shooter and a MOBA game. According to Kim, it will be very different from Black Desert and designed for consoles.
Kim did not want to reveal more information in the interview. Whether the planned MOBA shooter is a good idea is debatable. So far, games from this genre have mostly failed colossally (Battleborn) or have not been continued at all (Amazon’s first title Breakaway).
Pearl Abyss has to come up with something to succeed in this genre.
Meanwhile, Black Desert remains the flagship of Pearl Abyss. In 2018, dragons and the long-awaited graphic update for Black Desert Online are expected to be released.
