In Fallout 4, there is a Vault whose terrible purpose is gradually uncovered during exploration. The outcome is quite dark, even by Fallout standards.
What are Vaults? The underground bunkers scattered throughout the wasteland of Fallout primarily serve to protect against the radioactive radiation on the surface. However, there are a number of examples that have been repurposed for experiments.
Need examples? In Vault 11, which can be found in Fallout New Vegas, a resident was sacrificed every year. Only the bunker was kept operational.
In Vault 106, drugs were experimented with, leading to war-like conditions within the Vault.
However, especially insidious is Vault 75 from Fallout 4. There, a clear goal was pursued: to improve human genetics and breed the perfect human.
How was that supposed to succeed? Well, it requires strong nerves.

A New Generation of Children
What happened in Vault 75? Initially, the bunker was marketed as protection for parents and their children. The Vault is located directly beneath Malden Middle School, which can be found in Fallout 4.
While exploring the building, sooner or later, you will come across a grate door and subsequently find the entrance to the Vault.
The grate door already gives a small taste of what is yet to come. During the Great War in 2077, numerous families sought shelter from the falling bombs. But upon entering the Vault, they had to realize that they were part of a malicious plan.
The parents were separated from their children and cold-bloodedly killed. Their daughters and sons were led deeper into the Vault.
There, the overseers and other staff told them how dangerous it would be on the surface. They had to adequately prepare before leaving the safe bunker.
From then on, the children were trained both mentally and physically and observed as they developed. Those children who proved to be particularly strong, intelligent, and talented received a vaccination upon reaching adulthood and their genes were “harvested”.
How exactly the harvesting looked is unknown. However, the terminals in the Vault suggest that organs were removed and stored. With them, new, better humans were bred.
What happened to the less strong children? All those who were not strong enough but still showed intelligence were made into scientists. They then worked on the gene experiments based on research by Dr. Braun from Vault 112.
Left were those children who were simply too weak for the Vault’s demands. First, they were still deceived into thinking that they had completed their training. Then they were led to a secret place in the Vault, killed, and their bodies cremated.
How did Vault 75 end? Whether the residents managed to breed a genetically optimized human is not revealed in the terminals. What is certain is this: When players visit the Vault in Fallout 4 in 2287, there is nothing left of the former inhabitants.
Instead, the factions of the Gunner or alternatively, the Steel Brotherhood have taken over the bunker. If you confront them, you will discover the dark story of Vault 75 for yourself.
