Thriller lovers, take note: If you haven’t done so yet, you should give a series on Netflix a chance. With only five episodes, it offers a brief excursion into the world of the wealthy and features three strong main actresses.
What is the series about? It is called Sirens and premiered on May 22, 2025, on Netflix. The series is based on a play named Elemeno Pea, which was written by Molly Smith Metzler.
She was also responsible for the Netflix series as the showrunner. In total, there are five episodes, each ranging from 52 to 63 minutes long.
For the streaming service, the series has so far been a resounding success. According to Whats-on-Netflix, the five episodes alone were viewed 69.7 million times in 2025. The viewing hours have totaled 329.9 million since May of last year.
Especially for those who enjoy thrillers that incorporate elements from other genres like dark comedy, satire, and social critique, Sirens is worth a look.
A Dubious Boss
What is the series about? The plot unfolds over the course of a weekend. Devon wants to reconnect with her sister Simone and travels to an island. There, Simone works for a billionaire named Michaela, nicknamed Kikki.
She lives in a luxury estate on the island and is very eccentric on one hand, while also arousing suspicion in Devon. Something seems to be amiss on the island. Soon, Devon recognizes cult-like behavior with Michaela as the central figure, leading her to decide to help her sister Simone.
Is the series good? With 69 million views, the production has already garnered quite a bit of attention last year. But what do the critics say? On Rotten Tomatoes, Sirens has received a rating of 75%.
So while the series may not be the best the genre has to offer, it can still be classified as a recommendation and a successful production. The focus of praise is on the three leading actresses: Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus) as Devon, Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Simone, and Julianne Moore (Magnolia) as Michaela.
All three deliver outstanding performances and play their roles excellently. Additionally, the storyline is not very predictable, as noted by Katie-Ann Gupwell from Daily Mirror: “It really surprises you, as there are always unexpected twists.”
More critical voices lament the unsatisfactory resolution of the story and a somewhat unoriginal statement about the wealthy social class. Exciting for mythology fans: The title of the series suggests that motifs like that of the sirens are creatively woven into the plot.
Anyone with about five hours of time and a bit of interest in the thriller genre should give the series a chance. In the worst case, you’ll watch three talented actresses showcase their art against luxurious backdrops. Milly Alcock will soon be seen in a completely different role on screen: Superman’s cousin is getting her own movie and is being compared directly to John Wick
