If you thought that Doom came unexpectedly in the Middle Ages: A new game on Steam that strongly resembles Doom lets you play as a pirate … without a head … and in a kind of outer space, but actually it’s the underworld.
Which game is being talked about? It refers to the freshly announced action FPS Davy x Jones. The game is being developed by Parasight, the creators of Blacktail.
The first announcement trailer already gives a good idea of what you can expect:
From the legendary pirate to the devil in person
What is the game about? You are Davy Jones: A legendary pirate who has ended up in the afterlife for pirates and sailors – but not before being betrayed, robbed, and beheaded. Too angry to just die, his body Jones and his severed head Davy embark on a quest for revenge as a duo.
By the way: Those familiar with sailors’ yarn know that Davy Jones was actually not a pirate. Rather, he was a kind of devil of the sea. “Davy Jones’ Locker” – an English name for the sailor’s grave – is simply called “The Locker” in the game. So expect a kind of origin story here? Since you are supposed to become “the devil himself,” according to the developers, that’s not so far-fetched.
The Locker definitely has a rather unique space aesthetic. For example, you can see different star constellations in the “sky.” With the Abby – your ship, which is half made of whale – you also fly from one floating island to another.
Even though you are not really in outer space, it sure feels that way.
Davy Jones meets the “Doom Guy”
Where does the comparison to Doom come from? This mainly stems from the shooter gameplay. Many players immediately feel reminded of Doom after the first trailer:

On your journey through the afterlife, you fight like every good pirate with sword and pistol through the ranks of cursed souls and monsters. You can even use your severed head as a projectile for your pistol to shoot at enemies.
A feature from Doom Eternal even makes it directly into the game: There is a grappling hook that you can use to pull yourself towards enemies. However, the level of violence is significantly lower compared to the Doom series. So if you want to slaughter through hordes of enemies as bloodily as possible, you will be less satisfied here.
When will the game be released? There is currently no release date for Davy x Jones. It is also unclear whether the game will still be released in 2025. The game is supposed to be available for PC on Steam as well as for consoles. However, the developers have not yet revealed which consoles those are.
With Doom: The Dark Ages, the original itself visits an unusual setting. It is about demon hunting in the Middle Ages. The shooter allows you to customize the gaming experience significantly – a fact that a streamer has pushed to the limits: Twitch streamer makes the new Doom much faster and harder, culminating in a special “speedrun”
