For many seasons of Pokémon, Jessie tried as a member of Team Rocket to steal Ash’s Pikachu. However, she actually wanted to pursue a completely different career path.
What kind of person was she before? In the 13th episode of Season 3 of the Pokémon anime, viewers learn about Jessie’s backstory. In German, the episode is titled “Old Friends”. It first aired in June 2001.
In the episode, Team Rocket attempts to steal food from a Pokémon Center. During this, Jessie meets the Heitereia and they realize that they are old friends. Jessie remembers their time together at the Chaneira Nurse School.

Originally, she wanted to become a nurse and sat in a class with several Chaneiras. There, she learned how to bandage injuries properly and even helped other Pokémon. It seemed as though Jessie had not a single ounce of malice in her.
But the time in school made her into the person she is today.
From Nurse to Villain
What caused the change? Jessie was an outsider in the class from the very beginning. There was only one Chaneira who befriended her and sat with her during lunch.
Additionally, she simply couldn’t keep up with the abilities of the other Pokémon. When they used singing to calm the patients, Jessie also fell asleep, which led to reprimand from the teacher.
Jessie realized that she would never be as good as a Chaneira and that no one in school was interested in her, except for the one Pokémon she encountered as Heiteira in present times.
