Kliff is clearly the protagonist, guiding players through the adventure in Pywel, despite having two additional playable characters in Crimson Desert . However, he has long been considered one of the biggest points of criticism by many interested players. A fan has created a tool that allows even those who can’t stand Kliff to enjoy the game.
What is this tool? It’s a mod for Crimson Desert by the creator Khione95 on Nexusmods, which brings a character creator into the game. Specifically, one that transforms the stoic and rather generic Kliff into a female hero.
Until now, there hasn’t been a great deal of customization options for Kliff apart from a few cosmetic changes like equipment. However, this is set to become much more extensive with 98 female face presets and 159 hairstyles.
If you want customization options for Kliff without playing as a different gender, you won’t be left empty-handed. The mod creator has already revealed that a male character creator is also set to be released tomorrow, on April 9, 2026.
Mod could persuade skeptical gamers to give Crimson Desert a chance
Why is the mod causing such a stir in the community? What initially sounds like just a nice addition could have a significant impact on the community. The generic, rather “boring” Kliff and the lack of a character creator were a thorn in the side of many interested players, something that could be removed by the mod’s possibilities.
Even those players who can overlook this weakness would have wished that Pearl Abyss had incorporated the strong character creation of their MMO Black Desert into their open-world adventure.
“The lack of a character creator is quite puzzling, considering that Black Desert was known for it and this game doesn’t seem to be particularly story-driven,” writes chickenchaser19 on a post about the mod on Reddit.
How important is a character creator really? The importance of such a mechanic depends largely on the game and its player base. However, the reactions regarding Crimson Desert make it clear that a character creator could have benefited the game, or at least the mod could fill this missing gap.
“This is one of the reasons I didn’t buy the game at launch, even though I was very interested,” writes Falsus under the same Reddit post. Kliff isn’t spared here either: “I just really didn’t like the design of the main character.”
With this opinion, they are far from alone, which quickly explains the warm reception of such a mod:
- “If they had included a proper character creator, I would have bought it on day one for the PS5,” writes MadeByTango.
- “I didn’t buy the game because there isn’t a character creator. If this mod is really well done, I will reconsider,” thinks A_Confused_Cocoon.
- “I prefer playing as a female character… because I am a woman. If I play Crimson Desert, I will try this mod,” explains Background_Clue3756.
The mod seems to address exactly the right weakness within the player base of Crimson Desert, making it exciting to see how many female or generally reshaped protagonists could appear on Reddit soon.
