Anthem was permanently shut down on January 12, 2026? Forever? Well, a fan is making a brave stand and has managed to get a version of the game running on a private server. This ignites hope in the community.
The loot shooter Anthem is history, at least according to Electronic Arts. On January 12, 2026, the servers were shut down and the game went offline.
Although the title faced some criticism, it still had fans until the very end, who said their proper goodbyes on the last day – it was a true farewell ceremony.
Quickly, the question arose whether Anthem could continue to exist as a single-player game. Or alternatively be kept alive by the players themselves. One of them did not want to settle for just the theory and sat down to work on an implementation of the idea.
He has now shared the result with the community.
“Just an Experiment”
What has the player accomplished? A user named And799 uploaded a YouTube video showing how he starts Anthem itself alongside several debug consoles. As usual, it loads into the game and runs – admittedly a bit choppy, but at least it works.
Then the user starts a second version of the game. Both run on a private server. Some elements like certain online features do not work, but the video shows that Anthem runs this way for two players in the same matchmaking area.
What does the user say about it? In the video description, the user contextualizes his attempts to revive Anthem:
This is just a prototype from my research and experiments and does NOT represent the current progress of the ongoing private server/revival project. Since the game is now dead, I consider it the perfect time to take a look at it.
The video does not show a version that will soon be available to everyone. What the user means with the private server/revival project is also left open. But it is enough to spark hope in the community that something more could emerge from these first attempts.
What are the players saying? Under the video, comments from fans are gathering, mourning Anthem and now hoping that the game might be made accessible again in the future via private servers:
- “Please keep going, we’re putting all our hope in you!”, writes @vork8899.
- “It’s been less than a week 0_o, that’s excellent, not only the hosting but also the access from another instance on which it runs”, praises @TormentedGaming.
- “Man, this gives me hope. I wish I could do this myself, but unfortunately, I have no idea how”, admits @Chaotic_Entity.
- “This is awesome! I can’t wait to see the finished product that will excite us Anthem fans!”, hopes @crazisaturn2274, voicing what many fans likely hope.
- “Can we help somehow?”, asks @Crox-vy4wz and offers help – so far he has not received any response.
Realistically speaking, it is very unlikely that Anthem will go back online on a large scale as a fan project. But experiments like this show that it is technically possible, at least in small form, even if the game is far from optimized. What are your thoughts on this?
