MeinMMO author Caroline Fuller has already spent several hours in Elden Ring: Nightreign during a playtest event and the network test, playing various characters. However, one of them particularly impressed her.
The release of Nightreign is approaching, and with it, the curiosity of many about how the new Nightfarers will feel compared to a self-created character from Elden Ring. Those who have already participated in the network test will have gotten a taste of the first 4 playable characters.
I too was able to play as Wylder, Guardian, Recluse, and Duchess, with the latter particularly standing out in my memory.
Although I also liked the other characters for their play styles and abilities, no one captured me quite like Duchess, as she provided the greatest success experiences in my runs.
Here you can see the trailer for Duchess in Elden Ring: Nightreign:
Duchess rewards exactly what makes Nightreign – timing and teamwork
While I initially thought that a character like Wylder might be my favorite, coming closest to my play style in Elden Ring with a mix of strength and dexterity, I was proved wrong.
Because in Nightreign, you don’t fight alone, but in a team. I don’t have to take care of everything; I just need to do my job well. And when you do your job well as Duchess – it feels particularly rewarding.
High value on precise timing
With Duchess, you achieve the gaming experience that feels just as good as perfectly executed dodging during a boss fight. Because timing is the main factor here. And this is shown not only through her mobility but also through her special abilities.
Duchess is very fast. She may not deal as much damage as other Nightfarers, but she is much nimbler. Through her passive ability “Magnificent Poise,” she can perform a double dodge to gain even more distance between herself and an opponent.
Moreover, she consumes less stamina for her actions, allowing her to defeat an opponent in a long sequence of constant attacks precisely and at the right moments without having to deal heavy blows.
But her other abilities also require a good sense of the right moments. Her talent “Restage” can reapply half of the damage from the last seconds. And this applies not only to the damage inflicted by Duchess but to any damage the targets have suffered during that period.
If you use it at the right moment, perhaps right after a strong attack from a teammate, you can make the opponent’s health bar melt away significantly.
An ultimate that helps the entire team
Duchess’ ultimate art “Finale” is a simple but immensely useful ability. She can cloak the entire team, making them invisible to enemies, providing a small window to recover, heal, resurrect, or heroically escape (as long as the fire circle allows it).
During the playtest event, my teammates and I noticed that the strength of players is their number. No matter how powerful a huge boss may be, three players can fairly easily defeat a strong opponent through focus control and a bit of perseverance.
However, it becomes more challenging when facing multiple opponents. If each player has at least one opponent on their tail, the advantage of numbers shatters, and it can become really critical if you lose your time to breathe.
Duchess’ ultimate was repeatedly the absolute salvation in these battles, as it allowed players to regroup and reposition, so one player wouldn’t have to handle multiple enemies alone. And being the savior in these situations and being able to help your team back on their feet felt very rewarding. In my playtest report, you can learn more about my first 8 hours in Nightreign.
Ultimately, it comes down to your playstyle, which Nightfarer might suit you best. Personally, I am already looking forward to dancing around old acquaintances like Margit again with Duchess. Whether she will remain my favorite can only be determined upon the release of Nightreign on May 30, 2025.
