There are only a few studios left that specialize in AA productions with a limited budget and a single-player focus. One of these studios is from France and is now likely to close its doors.
Which studio is it? Spiders is a Paris-based studio that was founded in 2008 and specialized in action RPGs after initial attempts with adventures (Sherlock Holmes Versus Jack the Ripper, Gray Matter).
Between 2012 and 2016, games like “Of Orcs and Men,” “Mars: War Logs,” “Bound by Flame,” or “The Technomancer” were created at Spiders with a comparatively small budget and little time – all titles that hinted at the studio’s potential, but after a few hours, they ran out of steam and sank into mediocrity.
When GreedFall was released in 2019 and Steelrising in 2022, the titles showed the result of a longer development period: although they still had their flaws (and wasted potential), I still enjoyed them greatly:
- GreedFall reminded me of old BioWare RPGs, but with a fresh scenario that mixes tricorn hats, muskets, and magic, and an exciting world. On Steam, it currently has 76 percent positive reviews.
- Steelrising, on the other hand, is a Soulslike that takes you to Paris during the French Revolution, where King Louis XVI unleashes his mechanical creatures on the population. I liked the setting, the world, and the battles, even though it could never reach the high standards set by FromSoftware. On Steam, the game currently has 73 percent positive reviews (and is on sale for just under 6 euros).
Nacon has run out of money
What’s happening with Spiders? According to the website origami.ng, Spiders is likely to close soon. The reason lies with Bigben Interactive and Nacon, who have fallen into financial trouble.
In February 2026, Nacon, the parent company of Spiders, had to file for bankruptcy and apply for a restructuring process. For some of its divisions, including Spiders, it seemed they wanted to find interested buyers.
On April 29, 2026, the insolvency administrator is reportedly set to apply for judicial liquidation at the commercial court. If the studio closes, over 70 employees would be affected.
Recently, the developers at Spiders released GreedFall: The Dying World, the sequel to GreedFall – first in Early Access and then, in March 2026, in its final version. Part 2 again has special strengths like an entertaining story or a unique world, but it also feels unfinished and rough in many areas.
The sales numbers for the GreedFall sequel are said to be disappointing, with Steam showing the game at 62 percent positive with only 883 ratings. If the report is accurate, there will be no opportunity for the team to address at least some of the weaknesses and issues, or to do it better with a Part 3. That’s a real shame.
According to origami.ng, Nacon has not yet officially commented on the future of Spiders. Another project codenamed Dark, which the studio had worked on in parallel to the Early Access of GreedFall 2, was already canceled last year. Meanwhile, this is about a success story on Steam: Company by HandOfBlood released dwarf game on Steam, developer celebrates 250,000 sales: “It just kept getting better”
