Counter-Strike: Source is currently experiencing a significant increase in players: Over 40,000 players joined Steam in just one month. But even fans are unsure why.
What kind of game is this? Counter-Strike: Source is a PvP shooter from Valve that was released on November 1, 2004, on Steam. The game is nearly 21 years old. After all this time, it seems that the shooter is experiencing a new hype:
- In recent months, CS: Source had around 15,000 players on Steam according to the online database SteamDB (steamdb.info)
- However, in July 2025, the number of players increased massively: On June 26, there were around 16,000 concurrent players, but by July 26, there were almost 57,000
- The game gained around 40,000 new active players in just one month

Where does this increase in players come from? No one really knows: Even the community of the shooter is confused. The last update for CS: Source was released in February 2025. It brought a few bug fixes and “Quality of Life” improvements like UI scaling and adjustments for modern systems.
In a post on Reddit, players discussed the influx and provided their own explanations:
- A Reddit user speculates that the Summer Sale 2025 might have something to do with it. There, CS: Source cost only €1.95 instead of the usual €9.75.
- He and many others also say under this post that it’s simply a good game. The Steam reviews confirm this, as they are 96% positive. Furthermore, the game still runs well on older hardware.
Some players, however, believe that the new “players” are bots. A Reddit user shares a screenshot showing multiple Russian servers with the exact same name. When asked if CS: Source is becoming popular, he replies: “It’s not. It’s Russian bot servers for God knows why.”
Others suspect that the shooter may be benefiting from a new update in another game.
What is this update? On July 23, Garry’s Mod received an update on Steam that brings many elements from CS: Source and Half-Life 2 into the game. The timing coincides with the sudden player increase. However, whether this is really the reason remains speculation.
In that regard, it is still unclear why CS: Source is currently so popular again – whether for real players or also bots, should this allegation prove true.
