Leveling in WoW: Forever
How does the leveling phase proceed? After character creation, you find yourself in the starting area of your race (more on that later). From this moment on, you uncover new regions, kill enemies, and complete quests. All of this grants you experience points.
Each experience point earned goes into your XP bar, which is located in the standard interface above your first skills bar. This bar consists of 20 sections, each symbolizing 5 percent progress towards the next level up. The bar can have two colors:
- Purple: You receive normal experience from all sources.
- Blue: You are rested and therefore receive 200% of normal experience for killing enemies – we will explain rest in more detail later.
Once the bar is filled to 100%, you will gain a level up until you eventually reach the maximum level of 60.
What do level ups bring in WoW? Each level up makes your character stronger, and that on several levels:
- Your stats increase.
- The skill cap of your learned skills increases, meaning you can continue to increase the skill for your used weapons or further level your professions or special arts (like poisons and lockpicking for rogues). You can find all your skills in the character window (shortcut: C), under the skills tab.
- At level 10, you unlock your talents (shortcut: N). From then on, you will receive one talent point with each level up, which you can invest in one of the three trees.
- As your level increases, you unlock new skills or upgrades for already learned skills from your class trainers. So make sure to visit the trainers regularly and bring enough silver or gold with you.
Your character level also directly affects combat, as WoW constantly checks your level and the level of the enemy you are fighting.
The greater the difference, the harder it is for the fighter with the lower level to hit the other or land critical hits. It also becomes rarer for the fighter with the lower level to successfully escape an attack or spell. Additionally, enemies with a higher level will notice you faster.
As a general rule: It is best to fight enemies that are at your level or below. However, be aware that gray quests and enemies grant you significantly fewer experience points, as they are 5 levels or more below your level.
Unlike many modern MMORPGs, you do not receive experience points in WoW: Forever when you attack enemies that are already engaged in combat with other players. Experience and quest progress are only granted to you if you have attacked an enemy first or if you are part of a group and a group member was able to land the first blow.
Enemies that have already been “tagged” (i.e., attacked first) by other players have a gray nameplate.
The starting areas in WoW: Forever
All characters in WoW: Forever begin their adventure in the starting areas of their chosen race. Here is the overview:
| Race | Starting Area | Where to go next? |
| Humans | Elwynn Forest | Westfall |
| Dwarves and Gnomes | Dun Morogh | Loch Modan |
| Night Elves | Teldrassil | Darkshore |
| Orcs and Trolls | Durotar | Badlands |
| Undead (Forsaken) | Tirisfal | Silverpine Forest |
| Tauren | Mulgore | Badlands |
| Void Elves | Zephras Isle | Badlands (Horde) / Westfall or Darkshore (Alliance) |
Note that no one forces you to go through the generally prescribed start with a race. If you play an Undead but your friends are Orcs and Trolls, you can try to get your level 1 character from Tirisfal to Durotar.
However, this entails a long, dangerous journey. Stick to the paths; there are rarely enemies! You can switch continents using zeppelins (Horde) or ships (Alliance). If you know a higher-level Mage or Warlock, they can safely teleport or summon you to your desired location or a safe city.
