WoW: Player confesses how he cheated Stormwind during Christmas

WoW Female Human Holding Present titel title 1280x720

A small confession amuses the community of World of Warcraft. A player has cheated everyone and earned so much gold.

To earn gold in World of Warcraft, there are many different ways. Grinding, world quests, absolute dominance in the auction house – there are many methods to rake in a solid sum. What is also possible: Cheating. Not particularly honorable, but sometimes it leads to the goal. A player confesses how he made money with a nasty scam 20 years ago.

A Christmas Full of Hammers

What did the player do? In the WoW Subreddit, “fateofmorality” admits that he has been carrying a guilty conscience for 20 years. Because so many years ago – even at Christmas – he betrayed many fellow players in World of Warcraft with a nasty trick:

He bought many blacksmith hammers from an NPC (for a few copper) and wrapped them in gift paper. Then he looked through the /who query to see who was online in Stormwind and sent a letter to each character in turn, each with a gift – and a cash-on-delivery price of 1 gold. The letter claimed it was a lottery and some of the packages might actually contain something good.

He describes the outcome as follows:

For me as a pre-teenager, who never leveled a character above level 40, the amount of gold I earned was astronomical. […] I later transferred the gold to my main and deleted the character a few days later.

I have been living with this guilt for two decades. I attribute all the bad things in my life to the bad karma I accumulated from this event. I just had to get it off my chest. The guilt has been gnawing at me for far too long.

Never accept gifts in the mail with cash on delivery. They are just hammers.

Community confesses its own methods: Back in the Vanilla days of World of Warcraft, some creative methods were found to make money. A few other stories:

  • “Back in Vanilla, I was about 13 years old and had the idea that I could just sell beer that I got from an NPC vendor. So I wandered around Orgrimmar, in front of the bank and auction house, shouting: “Beer, buy your beer here!” and people paid me, from a few silver to several gold coins. One even gave me 5 gold. After 2 hours, I had 0 experience gained, but that was a good 50 gold.” – Takeasmoke
  • “I did the same with fishing rods in Vanilla. At some point, a GM showed up and told me to stop.” – NteC
  • “I always said in /2 that I was selling items that were currently in the auction house, just for a higher price. If someone responded, I just bought the stuff from the AH and then resold it to them at a higher price.” – richardimir

Do you have any confessions to make about how you earned gold in the early days of World of Warcraft (or in more recent times)? Are you proud of all your methods? Or did you find some ways that luckily never got discovered? Sometimes it is of course enough to just find an old, valuable item in your inventory …
