Fortnite: Battle Royale
What is Fortnite? Originally, Fortnite was created as a team-based survival game with the later subtitle “Save the World,” where you had to fend off waves of zombies and build strong defenses with gathered materials.
This PvE mode has largely been forgotten, since the battle royale mode was released at the end of 2017. This mode is free to play and was initially labeled as a cheap PUBG clone, but today it is one of the most successful games overall.
True to the battle royale style, you land in a lobby with 100 players on a map, collect loot, and strive to be the last one standing while the storm gradually shrinks the playable area.
Fortnite stands out with its timeless comic style and a building system that was carried over from the PvE mode. The best players use this system to quickly build a fortress under fire, bridge long distances with high ramps, or engage in spectacular fights at the end of matches.
Fortnite here also represents most battle royale titles as the genre in itself has greatly benefitted from Twitch. However, Fortnite remains king.
Fortnite set its current record on June 15, 2020. At that time, over 2.3 million players watched simultaneously. The huge live event occurred after Season 2 with the Doomsday.
The game has since allowed many streamers to grow on Twitch – most notably Ninja, who still has the most followers worldwide. Other stars, like Tfue, have stopped streaming after their breakthrough with Fortnite.
How does Fortnite perform on Twitch? Since the release of the battle royale mode, Fortnite has grown on Twitch and has consistently posted strong numbers there. Fortnite has held the number 1 most-watched game spot for a long time and is rarely absent from the top 5 even today.
How did it benefit from Twitch? The story of Fortnite and Twitch is likely one where both sides won. It’s hard to separate their developments and nearly impossible to say which benefitted more, Fortnite or Twitch. They have grown together.
The biggest stunt the game pulled might have been with the Prime packages. These became significant with Fortnite and allowed viewers to get free content for their games.
These packages are an offering from Twitch Prime, a connection of the streaming platform with Amazon Prime. Anyone who is a Prime customer can merge their accounts and receive some bonuses on Twitch, like a free subscription per month and these packages.
These packages usually contain exclusive cosmetics that are not available anywhere else. In a free-to-play game, these are the kinds of things that can attract players since most free games rely on skin shops.
