What is New World? New World is Amazon Games’ first big title. Originally, it was a kind of sandbox PvP MMORPG, but now many theme park elements have been added, including a main quest and dungeons. Moreover, PvP in the open world has become optional.
In the game, you take on the role of an explorer stranded on the island of Aeternum. There, you can find the legendary material Azoth, which promises immortality. However, it also corrupts creatures that become too greedy or careless.
What is the unique selling point? New World has a unique and rather untypical combat system for MMORPGs. Instead of classes, you use weapons, but each weapon has only three abilities. Additionally, you have both light and heavy attacks.
The fights proceed rather statically and slowly. Tactics and dodging or blocking at the right moment are more important than memorizing a rotation of abilities. Moreover, New World places a strong emphasis on exploration and crafting, making it feel a bit like a survival game. For many, this is precisely what makes the game charming.
Who is New World aimed at? Mainly explorers, crafters, and fans of dungeons will get their money’s worth. In the endgame, much revolves around influence in the territories, the wars for areas, and the PvP mode Outpost Rush. Recently, however, there have been significantly fewer offerings for PvP fans.
Additionally, players who want to experience a grand hero story like in WoW or SWTOR should avoid New World. Although the story has been extensively overhauled, it has not yet reached a high standard.
What content requires real money? First, you need to purchase New World. The MMORPG costs 37.99 euros for the standard edition and 47.99 euros for the Digital Deluxe Edition. This special edition comes with an armor skin, a pet, a digital art book, and the emote “Rock, Paper, Scissors”.
The MMORPG also features a shop where you can buy additional cosmetic content. Furthermore, “convenience items” such as XP boosts are planned for the future. In 2023, the first expansion Rise of the Angry Earth was released, which you must also purchase for 28.99 euros.
What does the future of New World look like? New World started off excellently with over 900,000 concurrent players on Steam. However, bugs, exploits, gold dupes, and numerous server problems significantly dampened the initial hype.
Since then, there have been several good updates, and many new contents have been added. However, player numbers have dropped, and currently, only around 20,000 players log in each day. There are already big plans on the agenda for New World in 2024.
