Modern games can be very large today. Thirty years ago, games were much smaller and so were the storage media. Today, a modern 3D asset would not fit on a PS1 memory card.
Sony’s first PlayStation console, the PS1, was officially released on December 3, 1994. That is now over 30 years ago. Much has changed technologically since then, and we have reached the PS5.
Game saves, high scores, and settings were stored on so-called memory cards. These were available in various colors and versions and had a maximum capacity of 128 KB. Today, not even a toe of Kratos would fit on a memory card.
Memory cards hold 128 KB, modern games are much, much larger today
128 KB was comparatively little even back then. Even a standard 5.25-inch floppy disk could hold at least 360 KB.
What does the current situation look like? Looking at modern games from the “God of War” series, none of them would even remotely fit on the small memory cards: On the PS5, God of War: Ragnarök is 90 to 100 GB in size, on PC the game is another 100 GB larger.
Individual 3D assets can easily encompass several hundred MB depending on size and detail richness. Thus, a 3D toe of Kratos would hardly find space on such a card, even in a highly compressed form.
It must be correctly pointed out, however, that these memory cards were never intended for games. The games for the PS1 were primarily stored and played from CD-ROMs at that time. And these offer significantly more space, with up to 660 MB. However, even a CD-ROM is no longer sufficient for a modern God of War today.
Would modern save files fit on them? No, even official save games from God of War: Ragnarök would not fit on a memory card today, as they are usually between 10 and 50 MB in size, and even that is much too large for the memory card. On PC, you can often use the Steam Cloud for save games anyway.
Anyone looking to buy a gaming PC or modern gaming console is faced with high prices. A community example shows just how much prices have risen in recent years. Gaming has become increasingly expensive over the years: Players demonstrate, using the PlayStation as an example, that gaming is becoming more and more a luxury hobby
