EVE Online
Setting: Science Fiction Developer: CCP Games | Platform: PC | Release Date: May 6, 2003 | Model: Limited Free2Play, Subscription nearly mandatory
How can you live out your evil side? EVE Online is a sandbox MMORPG where it’s all about exploring the vastness of space with your own ship. There is open PvP in many areas, which alone allows you to become a villain. After all, you can make another player’s life difficult by destroying their ship.
You have always been able to earn reputation with the pirates, which then makes you the enemy of otherwise friendly NPCs.
With the new expansion Havoc, which releases on November 14, you can even ally with the pirates and earn new rewards. This allows you to actively get involved in the faction wars and participate as a sort of third faction.
What else does the game offer? In EVE Online, it’s all about getting a bigger and better spaceship. You start with a small ship and gradually develop yourself further. New ships can either be crafted yourself or bought from other players.
In EVE Online, almost everything is created by players and their guilds (Corporations). Other players are also important to exploit the full potential of the MMORPG.
You need to plan missions together or can participate in large wars. You can have fun alone, but you miss the unique moments of the game. These include battles like the World War Bee II, where approximately 3 million dollars were burned, or dramas between players, where friends suddenly become enemies.
Additionally, the costs for deaths in a group are easier to handle. When someone dies, they lose their current possessions, including their beloved spaceship.
Is it still worth joining in 2023? If you want to dive deep into a space game and can handle the risk of losing your ship, then EVE Online is still the best choice in 2023. Enough players are online all day long to experience special moments.
However, it often feels more like a simulation than a classic MMORPG. Much takes place in your own planning, Excel spreadsheets, and communication with other players. The battles, on the other hand, are – apart from the larger wars – not highlights.
Honorable Mention: City of Villains Private Server
How can you live out your evil side? City of Villains was originally a standalone expansion released in 2005 for the game City of Heroes. This campaign allowed you to create villains and wreak havoc on the world.
Unlike DC Universe, the noticeable difference between good and evil characters remains here. You do not suddenly work with the heroes, but remain true to your line.
Later, a third faction called Rogues was introduced that wavers between the good and the evil.
Why is this only an Honorable Mention? City of Heroes and thus also City of Villains were shut down on November 30, 2012. They were not profitable enough for NCSoft. Additionally, the Korean publisher released 3 new MMORPGs that year that were deemed more important.
However, it can still be played on a private server today. Several options are available, with Homecoming being the most popular. However, you can tell the game’s age and the fact that there is no large company behind the server. That’s why it is only an Honorable Mention.
