In 2015, Crowfall was announced as a game that aimed to revolutionize the MMORPG genre. It planned to reconnect theme park and sandbox styles, incorporate strategy elements, and create different scenarios that were supposed to play out like a season of Game of Thrones.
The plan also included the idea that there would be multiple worlds in which players could “win” the MMORPG. The gains earned there were to be brought into a permanent, social world: the Eternal Kingdoms. Additionally, the developers announced a broad class system, with 11 classes and a total of 33 subclasses.
Seven years after the announcement, on July 6, 2021, the release occurred. Without hype. With disappointing player numbers. The result: layoffs and a looming studio closure. The solution: The game and the team were sold to the indie studio Monumental in December 2021.
Almost a year later, the developers announced their intention to do a “Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn” style reboot, specifically to take the game offline to reinvent it and make extensive adjustments.
That was in November 2022. Now, almost two and a half years later, there is still no sign of life from Crowfall. It’s a pity for the many backers who invested so much money in the project. You can find out more here: Players invest $1.7 million in an MMORPG – It’s now dead and yet not
