Since August 26, 2025, the third phase of Alpha Two of Ashes of Creation has been running, with 24/7 operation, new content and first guild dramas. In December, the Steam launch of Early Access and the “Harbinger” update followed, featuring a naming system for new PvE and PvP challenges.
Additionally, the Ren’Kai people, the summoner class, mules, and more landed on the alpha servers. So, is everything going according to plan at Intrepid? Well, we thought so for a long time. But events took a turn at the end of January or beginning of February 2026.
Following the surprising resignation of studio head Steven Sharif and many lead developers, mass layoffs occurred, along with reports of external decision-makers and the realization that Ashes of Creation has likely not been developed as independently as the team has promised for years.
No one currently knows how the project, into which countless millions of dollars, years, and heart and soul have been invested, will continue. However, it seems unlikely that a game will ever be released that can embody the vision of Ashes of Creation. Thus, one of the last ambitious MMO projects from the West bids farewell.
Ashes of Creation is supposed to be a sandbox MMORPG in a fantasy setting, taking place in a vast open world. You will fight against world bosses and compete against each other in PvP. Additionally, there should be a system where you level areas, construct villages and cities, and alter regions of the game world – the so-called “Nodes”.
