After the Nintendo Switch gained a new competitor in the handheld market with the Steam Deck, another company wants to enter the market: Logitech and Tencent are planning a streaming handheld together.
These are the companies involved: Logitech and Tencent announced on August 2, 2022, their intention to work together on the project.
- Logitech is known as a manufacturer of computer accessories. The Swiss-based company makes keyboards, mice, the best-selling headset on Amazon, and pretty much everything else you might need at work or for gaming.
- Tencent, on the other hand, is a Chinese corporation that has become a true giant in the gaming industry. Tencent is leading the mobile gaming market but is also involved in countless other projects.
According to a statement, both companies share a “common vision for the future of gaming” (via blog.logitech) and apparently see this in cloud gaming – particularly right in your hands.
What Tencent and Logitech are planning
What kind of project is this? Together, the two companies want to develop a “cloud gaming handheld” and even bring it to market within this year – that is, 2022.
Logitech is expected to contribute hardware expertise, while Tencent is set to bring software knowledge.
The device, which currently has no name, is expected to support various cloud gaming services. According to the statement, the two companies are collaborating with teams from Xbox Cloud Gaming and NVIDIA GeForce Now so that players can “play AAA games when they are away from their console and PC.”
Downloading games is reportedly not necessary. The games are intended to be streamed from external servers and controlled by players. Whether downloads are completely off the table is not clear from the announcement.
No further information about the device is currently available – it is only clear that it is expected to be released this year.
This could create another competitor in the handheld market. In addition to common smartphones, which are now also suitable for cloud gaming, the dominant players are mainly the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck – although the latter is still not easy to obtain.
