Myth 5 – Luigi in Super Mario 64

One of the most famous Mario games is Super Mario 64. Besides cool missions and secrets that you can explore as Mario, there is a myth you may have heard: You can unlock Luigi as a playable character.
Through the star statue in the courtyard of the palace, players found a message that stated “L is real 2401.” Many fans felt confirmed in their theory and tried to either collect exactly 2401 coins or walk the same number of steps around the statue to unlock Luigi.
Despite fans’ efforts, Luigi could not be unlocked, and for good reason. Shigeru Miyamoto, one of the famous minds behind Mario, revealed in an interview from 1996 where Luigi was: “Well … until February, he was in the game. Ultimately we had to remove him due to memory issues. Then we wanted to include him in a Mario Bros.-style mini-game, but since most users probably only have one controller when they buy their N64, we decided against it for that reason (and other reasons).”
At that time, hardly anyone had a PC, and Google was still bleak. So anyone who didn’t hear about the interview still believed in the myth. As a nod to the mystery surrounding Luigi, Nintendo implemented Mario’s brother as a playable character in the Nintendo DS version of Super Mario 64.
