In MMORPGs, content is often repeated, as players engage with the games for a long time and do not abandon them when the story ends.
However, trudging through the same dungeons can become boring over time. You know where every branch is, where the next boss lurks, and what traps to watch out for. Many players enjoy this, as it allows them to play particularly efficiently, farm quickly, and reach their goals faster. But for others, boredom often sets in.

Every time a new challenge
Randomly generated dungeons could provide relief. The same dungeon is generated anew each time you enter. The monsters are distributed differently, as is the loot, traps, and bosses. In principle, it’s as if you are entering a new dungeon. Every visit would be a challenge. But here arises a question: How does this fit into an atmospheric and well-crafted game world?
Handcrafted dungeons are more atmospheric
Most MMORPG developers ensure that the game worlds make sense, have a backstory, and that all locations are thoughtfully designed and atmospherically constructed. A dungeon has a story that tells what happened there and why monsters reside there. The architecture is important to reflect this story. A random dungeon would simply be a collection of corridors and rooms that, although they could also look good, would lack a truly coherent and fitting style.
Furthermore, it would probably need to be explained in the lore why the dungeons are constantly changing. Because if this happens without explanation, the credibility of the game world suffers. So it is a double-edged sword. Randomly generated dungeons can increase the replay value of an MMORPG and keep exploring dungeons interesting. However, this can also affect the atmosphere.
What do you think? How do you feel about randomly generated dungeons in MMORPGs? Do you prefer to have something new to explore all the time or would you rather have a credible game world? Let us know in the comments.
