If you want to buy a graphics card, you will pay significantly less than months ago. However, it might be worth your while to wait for the purchase of a new GeForce or Radeon card.
Graphics cards are becoming cheaper again, so many gamers want to buy a graphics card. However, some leakers claim that the next generation will offer double the performance of the current graphics cards.
What is behind this and what does it mean for you if you want to buy a graphics card?
Allegedly, RTX 4000 and RX 7000 are twice as fast as current graphics cards
Where is the information from? Two well-known leakers, Greymon55 and Kopite7kimi have posted information about the new graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia on Twitter. Even though not all of their leaks are always correct, they are considered reliable sources.
Nevertheless, you should always view leaks with a certain amount of skepticism.
How much performance is at stake? In a recent post, the leakers claim that the newest graphics card from Nvidia is supposed to reach more than 100 teraflops of performance. A flop in graphics cards and processors describes how many floating-point operations the chip can calculate per second. The higher the number, the better.
On paper, that would be more than double the performance that the RTX 3090 Ti currently offers. Because the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is supposed to deliver a raw performance of 40 TFLOPs. And the RTX 3090 Ti is currently the fastest graphics card for gamers.
Greymoon55 had also claimed that the RX 7900 XT, AMD’s new flagship, should offer 92 TFlops of performance. However, the user has since deleted the post on Twitter. Videocardz still refers to the post (via Videocardz.com). On paper, that would even be four times the performance of the RX 6900 XT, as it officially reaches 23 TFlops.
So far, the known leaks mainly refer to the high-end graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD. There is hardly any information about the entry-level and mid-range graphics cards, and these models are of interest to most gamers.
These GPUs are also the graphics cards that are sold the most on average. For many gamers, the question arises whether to buy a graphics card now or wait a bit longer.
Should I buy a graphics card now or wait?
Graphics card prices are currently falling again, after being too high in recent months. Little surprising that many users want to buy a graphics card now.
The rule still applies: If you can get an AMD or Nvidia graphics card like an RTX 3080 or an RX 6700 XT at the MSRP, then you can’t go wrong. With a current mid-range graphics card, you can easily play for four or five years.
However, many leaks indicate that the next generation of graphics cards could make a huge leap forward. But not only in terms of performance, the power consumption of the new graphics cards is also expected to increase significantly (via gamestar.de).
If you haven’t purchased a graphics card so far, then waiting might be worthwhile if you want even more performance and are willing to consume more power.
When will RTX 4000 and RX 7000 come out? It is certain that new graphics cards will come. However, no one knows when the graphics cards will be released and whether they will even be available at launch. Because the current generation (RTX 3000 and RX 6000) was completely sold out everywhere at launch and subsequently ended up being sold for thousands of euros on eBay.
