The Island of the Darkmoon Faire
No list of mysterious places in World of Warcraft would be complete without the Island of the Darkmoon Faire!
Of course, every player knows this island and has been there many times to grab various toys, mounts, or items for transmogging. But few players are aware of how bizarre and strange the entire island is designed and what kind of bustle is happening here.
First of all, nobody knows where the island actually is. It is not marked on any map, and even the interface does not reveal this. Normally, maps are always just “sub-maps” of another zone or continent – not so with the Darkmoon Isle. Ships from both the Alliance and Horde seem to have run aground.
But the island also has many secrets that we can only regard as playful antics. The horrible rabbit, which can be killed by most players with just one hit, may be amusing as a mechanic – but it’s actually quite eerie.

The same goes for the Erinys, who wait in an underwater cave – blood or high elves who have been corrupted by a strange device. The device, by the way, belongs to Chester, the undead human from Gilneas, who evidently knows exactly what he is doing with the elves. When you turn in the quest with the ring of the Erinys, he says “Oh, I see you found my darlings. Beautiful, isn’t it? It’s a shame this process also drives them mad.”
It becomes really eerie when you explore the island as a ghost after your character has died. You can then encounter other souls who report being bound to the fair forever. Did they want to outsmart Silas? Did they want to break their contract with the fair?
And the undead butcher who sells the meat of all player races, I probably don’t even need to mention…
Sure, it might be possible that all these things are “just a show” by Silas Darkmoon, the gnome leader of the fair. But that would be too simple an answer, wouldn’t it?
Did you already know all these places? Or do you know any other very strange areas in World of Warcraft? Let us know in the comments!
