A new cinematic shows where the journey in World of Warcraft is headed. The time of one of the most popular characters is running out.
With Dragonflight, World of Warcraft succeeds for the first time in many years in avoiding long waiting times between patches. Every few months a new update is released, and in just a few days, this will also be the case with Patch 10.1.5 “Rifts of Time”.
Even before the patch, Blizzard released the first in-game cinematic of the update, revealing not only a number of story details but also early dark omens for what might soon await one of the most popular characters in World of Warcraft.
What can be seen in the cinematic? The video shows Nozdormu together with Alexstrasza on the throne of the aspects. Nozdormu is plagued by visions that he himself calls “Clarity” – a glimpse into the immediate future. He sees that “the Eternals” have entered into a pact with Iridikron and are now working hand in hand with him. The goal is to finally make Nozdormu the leader of the Eternals.
Nozdormu sounds desperate. He sees hardly any chance of standing against an alliance of Iridikron and the Eternals – even though Alexstrasza does not give up on her friend, she also seems somewhat at a loss.
Why is Nozdormu so popular? Nozdormu is considered one of the most tragic characters of World of Warcraft. When he was entrusted with the protection of timelines, he also received a vision of how he would die. This death is seen as unavoidable, as it takes place in the “true” timeline. This means that this timeline and his death within it must occur if Azeroth is not to deviate from its path.
This, in turn, seems to also mean that Nozdormu must endure the transformation into “Murozond,” thus becoming the leader of the eternal dragonflight.
Nozdormu and his bronze dragons face quite a dilemma. Do they continue to fulfill their task given by the Titans and preserve the one true timeline in which Nozdormu dies? Or do they try to prevent Nozdormu’s death, potentially triggering the creation of Murozond?
This story, which has been developing since “The Burning Crusade,” seems to be reaching its climax in Dragonflight.
