The choice of your covenant in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is relatively binding. You can change your mind, but it can be quite a hassle. MeinMMO explains how you can still change your covenant and what you need to pay attention to.
The four covenants are the new core feature in Shadowlands and provide you with a large part of your new strength in the addon. They grant you new abilities, a story for each covenant, cosmetics, and more.
During the Shadowlands campaign, all covenants and their abilities will be introduced to you. In the end, you can choose one of them to join. You can find out more in our special with all the information, abilities, and rewards of the covenants on MeinMMO.
In itself, you have made your choice and will stick with it. However, it is possible to join another covenant if you change your mind. It is quite easy to do – but you should be really sure that you want to do it.
Why should I change my covenant? There are several reasons why you might want to change your covenant. If you want to collect other cosmetics, if the balance changes, or if simply your interest shifts, it might be possible that you want to join another covenant.
For progress and hardcore players, it can also be helpful to use one covenant for raids and another for mythic dungeons, so that they switch as needed. This is possible, but it requires a lot of effort.
Changing your covenant: Step-by-Step Guide
How to choose a new covenant: Basically, to change your covenant, you only need to talk to the leader of the covenant you want to join. You can find them all in the enclave in Oribos, gathered together in one place. The coordinates are listed in parentheses, which you can display with addons . Talk to:
- Polemarch Adrestes for the Kyrian (36,2 / 64,2)
- Lady Moonberry for the Night Fae (39,6 / 60,9)
- General Draven for the Venthyr (44,7 / 68,8)
- Secutor Mavix for the Necrolords (43 / 74)
Choose the only conversation option where you ask the leaders if they can help you join them. The NPCs will warn you that you have already joined another covenant and ask if you really want to betray your allies. Confirm this twice and you can join your new covenant.
Joining the old covenant again – here’s how
What happens if I want to return to my old covenant? It becomes difficult only when you want to return to the covenant. Because the respective faction has remembered that you chose someone else and requires proof of your loyalty again.
Even if you leave the covenant and immediately rejoin it, you must complete these tasks.
To prove yourself again, you will have to complete several tasks for your covenant. This is divided into four steps.
Step 1 – Talk to the leader
As with the switch, you need to talk to the leader of the respective covenant in Oribos, but this time with that of your old faction. They are not happy that you betrayed them and will ask you for a task.
Step 2 – Quest: “Prove Your Worth”
This will be your first task. You will receive the quest “Prove Your Worth,” in which you will need to complete tasks for your new old covenant. Like your covenant’s daily quest, you will need to fill a progress bar by:
- killing rare or elite enemies
- finding treasures
- completing world quests
- completing daily quests
- defeating dungeon bosses (difficulty level irrelevant)
However, you must complete all of this in your respective covenant area. This also applies to the dungeons. Each area has two dungeons that belong to their covenant, and their bosses count for progress:
- Kyrian: Necrotic Wake, Spires of Ascension
- Necrolords: Theater of Pain, Plaguefall
- Ardenweald: The Other Side, Mist of Tirna Scithe
- Revendreth: The Blooding Depths, Halls of Atonement
Step 3 – Wait for the next week
This step is easy but can take the longest: You have to wait until the weekly reset. This usually occurs on Wednesday at around 9:00 AM German time.
Make sure to submit the quest “Prove Your Worth” before the reset!
With the next week, you can then take on a new quest, which represents the fourth and final step.
Step 4 – Quest: “Regain Trust”
This quest works just like “Prove Your Worth.” You will need to complete various tasks again; the quest just has a different name and can only be done after the reset.
Only after you have submitted this quest will you return to your old covenant. So if you want to do something in another covenant, do it before you submit “Regain Trust.” If done correctly, you can juggle between two covenants. However, this requires a lot of work and good timing.
Which covenant for which class?
A potential reason to change covenants is that you initially made the wrong choice and would like to choose your “best covenant”. Or you want to play a different specialization for which another covenant is better. Or perhaps you suddenly find PvP much more interesting than PvE?
In our special on MeinMMO, you will find the best covenant for each class. The recommendations are non-binding and based on analyses and tips from experts as well as simulations.

In general, you should choose the covenant that you enjoy the most. The differences are minimal and mainly exist on paper. A covenant you cannot get along with will generally provide you with less performance than one you enjoy playing.
We also discuss the covenants and other features of Shadowlands in the MeinMMO podcast with editor Leya Jankwoski, GameStar community manager Marylin Marx, and WoW expert Benedict Grothaus. You can find the podcast on Spotify, iTunes, and on MeinMMO’s podcast page starting the evening of November 25.
