The presentation of the new World of Warcraft addon “Legion” has not only provided new insights but also raised many new questions. One of them is the role of Gul’dan …
Back in Azeroth
Anyone who hasn’t taken a look at the cinematic yet should catch up here. Keep in mind that this is just a snippet of the opening cinematic; the complete version will likely be available much later (possibly at BlizzCon).
To summarize what was seen: Gul’dan uses Fel magic to free Illidan from his prison. Some may now ask: Wasn’t Illidan dead? While that was thought, Maiev seems to have captured part of his essence – after all, it was her fault that Illidan escaped, so it seemed only logical that she also brought him back.
For all who can’t keep up with the current story: The video takes place in our Azeroth and not some strange parallel universe. At the end of “Warlords of Draenor”, Gul’dan was thrown by Archimonde through a portal – and now we know where to, into the Azeroth of our time. After freeing Illidan from his palace and casually turning the tomb of Sargeras into an interface for many demon portals, he disappears to Suramar, where he will ultimately await us as a raid boss. What exactly Illidan’s role in all this will be remains to be seen.
