World of Warcraft invites former players to take a look once again. The veterans are gifted a subscription for a few days. How to participate and make the most of the time is explained here.
How to play for free: From March 21 to March 25, you can play World of Warcraft completely for free as a former player. No subscription is required. Simply download the Battle.net client from the official website and install WoW.
However, there are some limitations. Those who did not purchase Battle for Azeroth will only have access to all content up to and including Legion. For the BfA content, there are only a few trial hours:
- 3 hours per character or
- until the completion of “A Divided Nation” (Alliance) / “We Need Each Other” (Horde)
- repeatable on up to 12 characters
However, those who already own Battle for Azeroth can enjoy all features. Only the subscription fee is waived for this period. A specific time for the end is still unknown.
Tips for Returners this Weekend
What should I know about BfA? Depending on when you stopped playing World of Warcraft, quite a bit has happened in Azeroth since then:
- Your Artifact Weapons from Legion have no power anymore
- several Allied Races have been added as playable races
- there are no more PvP servers, instead the War Mode
For former Legion players, this shouldn’t be too big of an adjustment. Players who stopped earlier might be quite confused. Much of the content that you discover before BfA will suddenly feel useless upon reaching Kul Tiras and Zandalar.

What should I experience? If you’re checking into WoW this weekend, you should make the most of the limited time and see as much as possible. We have some tips for you on how to get the most out of the free weekend.
For Legion players:
- play the Siege of Undercity
- get the Heart of Azeroth and listen to the stories of renowned NPCs
- play the introduction to Kul Tiras/Zandalar at least once
- test the new War Mode
- avoid the final content of Legion. This takes quite a bit of time for little payoff
For BfA players:
- advance the War Campaign and learn more about the war
- check out the raids Uldir and Siege of Dazar’alor
- participate in the new Warfront: Darkshore or explore it
- explore Kul Tiras and Zandalar if you haven’t already
- Island Expeditions can be interesting, but take a lot of time
- try to unlock one of the new Allied Races
For players before Legion:
- follow the story since your last visit. Each expansion has great stories
- try out the hero class Demon Hunter
- dive into your class halls from Legion if you’re interested in class fantasy
- familiarize yourself with the new abilities of your favorite class

These addons are helpful: If you want to experience Azeroth not just passively but also dive into the content, some addons make it much easier for you. A short list we recommend for the weekend:
- Bagnon and Scrap – better inventory management and automatic selling of junk
- Dominos – better control over action bars
- OmniBar – overview of cooldowns of opponents in PvP
- WoWQuote 2 – for funny quotes while leveling and exploring
- Mapster – for a more pleasant map
Addons are not mandatory, but they make many things more pleasant. The 9 best addons for Battle for Azeroth have been compiled in a separate article for you.
