Some in WoW Classic are angry – really angry. They feel betrayed by friends and guild. Because everyone is buying gold.
Some love the current state of WoW Classic and Wrath of the Lich King Classic. For others, the two versions of World of Warcraft have now become an absurd dystopia that could not have been imagined a few years ago.
The reason for this is the gold economy in the two games. There are always incidents where items are sold for many hundreds of thousands or even millions of gold during “GDKP-Runs”. Gold that in many cases cannot possibly have been earned legally.
Often behind this is the illegal purchase of gold and the still thriving bot culture, which Blizzard apparently cannot get under control.
The user “Insertblamehere” is venting his frustration and finds much support. He says:
(…) Playing the game fairly feels so depressing when people can simply spend $20 to get what you have farmed for days without any effort.
I had a good friend in the guild chat who always gave me tips on how to farm gold. And after I asked him how he got all that cool stuff, he simply admitted that he buys gold after pretending to have earned it legitimately. I felt so much disgust towards him that I don’t even want to talk to him anymore.
In his opinion, it is absurd when people now spend money on something they earned fairly during the time of “Vanilla”. This is just an attempt to relive their youth – but they fail because the feeling of success from having truly earned it is missing:
“I have a full-time job and kids and can’t farm the stuff anymore” – then the items shouldn’t go to you. If you no longer have time for the game, you shouldn’t get the cool items either, so let other people experience the things you experienced when you were young, you damn loser. Instead, you can spend $200 to have a dress-up doll with your troll, with a bunch of imaginary pixels that everyone knows you haven’t earned, just so you can fail to relive your youth.
So, rant over, I think I’m done with the game, literally everyone here is a gold buyer, you all disgust me, gg. Working hard for something just to find out that everyone is apparently playing a different game than I am, makes me feel like a damn idiot.
Especially the last sentence of his statement has resonated with many:
It’s funny how many gamers supposedly hate Pay2Win, but when they have a game without it, they will literally do anything to create their own Pay2Win.
Instead of simply viewing the post as a typical “rage comment”, he has received much support in the WoW Classic subreddit. Many are discussing how WoW Classic has changed. Most even believe that now “half of the active players would buy gold” – even though the numbers of course cannot be substantiated.
The abundance of GDKP runs and the exorbitant prices that are sometimes attained for items speak a clear language. It is almost impossible that so many players have earned these absurd amounts of gold legally.
The bot economy has harmed WoW Classic in the long term and continues to do so. Getting this situation under control again seems nearly impossible. The plan with the WoW token has apparently failed.
