World of Warcraft brings Cataclysm Classic – the reason for this is simple: One simply does not listen to the loudmouths who always find everything stupid.
For some, it was a reason for joy, for others a little shock. The next expansion for World of Warcraft Classic will be Cataclysm. Cataclysm still has the reputation among some players of having heralded the downfall of WoW. However, this cannot apparently be substantiated with data. Because Blizzard asked the fans and they are really looking forward to Cataclysm.
Where does the information come from? In an interview with PCGamesN, Holly Longdale from the WoW Classic team spoke about the release of Cataclysm and some fears of the developers and player community.
What was said? Before the decision was made for Cataclysm Classic, the community was surveyed, according to Longdale:
We thought, like many of our players, “Oh God, are they making Cataclysm?” and then we said: “Why don’t we just ask them?” Then we got the survey data and that was … not bad.
Blizzard regularly sends out surveys about its games, and the feedback from these surveys is apparently actually used. Longdale mentions that some players still have a “bad aftertaste” from Cataclysm when they think about the length of the expansion and some other circumstances.
But we were seriously really surprised and relieved that [the survey] calmed our fears – it felt like we should definitely bring Cataclysm.
The return of Cataclysm, however, does not mean that the game will be exactly like it was back then. The Classic team has been working on some changes for years, which are often discussed and criticized under the hashtag “#SomeChanges”. However, the majority of the changes are well received in the long run, even though there are exceptions such as the introduction of the WoW token in Wrath of the Lich King.
One of the changes will be that Cataclysm will run significantly faster than it did back then:
The sequence will be different – very likely, Cataclysm will take place over the course of a year.
In comparison, Cataclysm received its patches over a period of 18 months, and only after about 22 months did the next expansion, “Mists of Pandaria”, come.
However, the result of the survey was particularly important for the decision. Because according to those responses, Cataclysm had some of the “best raids in WoW’s history” and especially in the area of endgame content, the developers found in the survey that there was “practically nothing that players disliked. Even the classes – we thought we would receive unpleasant feedback there, but that was not the case.”
Longdale suspects that they simply let themselves be unsettled by a loud minority – or as she puts it:
I don’t know if we saw things that way because the words of the loudest in the room hurt us so much. But when we conducted the surveys, that was no longer the loudest voice.
Sometimes it indeed seems wise not to listen to the loud minority in the forum.
